HP Announces New Consumer Notebooks

Today HP announced the refresh of their entire consumer notebook lineup with new models following their MUSE design philosophy. MUSE, which stands for materials, usability, sensory appeal and experiences, is aimed at building and designing products that not only look excellent but have fantastic functionality. The model refresh includes notebooks from the Pavilion dv and dm-series as well as the ENVY lineup.

The Envy brand sees a shift to larger models that free HP from the performance-limiting size constraints imposed by the ancient 13- and 15-inch offerings.. Today the ENVY 14 and ENVY 17 will be taking over with the previous models being slowly phased out as stock diminishes. Another huge change is the lowering of the starting price on both models. Currently the entry price of the ENVY 13 is $1,399 with the ENVY 15 priced slightly lower at $1,299. HP will be lowering the starting price of the ENVY 14 to $999 with the ENVY 17 starting at $1,399. The ENVY 17 will be available for buy May 19th and the ENVY 14 on June 27th.

The new ENVY 14 and 17 will have Intel processors, ATI Mobility Radeon dedicated graphics, backlit keyboards, slot-loading optical drives, HP TrueVision HD Webcams and custom Beats Audio sound systems.

The ENVY 17 will come standard with the ATI’s Mobility Radeon 5850 Dedicated Graphics card, fully supporting their EyeFinity Technology. HP showed off the ENVY 17 at their press event; DiRT 2 played fluidly across three monitors, making use of the ENVY 17’s VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort-out connections.

The HP Pavilion dm-series is seeing a huge change, with the Intel-based dm3t being phased out. HP will still keep the dm3 around with the AMD-based dm3z. The dm4 will be added to the lineup, which will offer Intel dual-core processors and optional midrange ATI dedicated graphics. The dm4 will sport a chassis less than one inch thick and weigh 4.4lbs. It will also feature up to 640GB of storage and WLAN, WWAN, GPS and Bluetooth options.

The dv-series will also be seeing huge changes as models start getting design elements trickled down from the previous-generation ENVY models. HP is shifting away from keyboards with number pads on all notebooks smaller than 17 inches since they found most users didn’t find them comfortable to use. HP will instead focus on providing as much keyboard space as possible and omit touch-sensitive buttons that cluttered the area beneath the show. The new layout uses one-touch function-keys for media buttons. This was done to give the notebook a cleaner look as well as cut down on power consumption as the touch-sensitive buttons and LED lighting were a drain on the battery.

All new Pavilion dv-series notebooks also get redesigned Imprint finishes which combine matte and glossy elements to reduce the visibility of fingerprints and add texture. The new Imprint end has the pattern edges raised from the background color.

HP Pavilion dv5 Features:

  • Intel and AMD processors with quad-core support
  • 14.5-inch HD-resolution show
  • Up to 1TB of storage with 12.5mm hard drive support
  • Black cherry, champagne, and Sonoma red Imprint finishes.
  • Available May 19th with a starting price of $649.99

HP Pavilion dv6 Features:

  • Intel and AMD processors with quad-core support and high-end dedicated graphics options
  • 15.6-inch HD-resolution show with optional touch screen
  • Up to 1TB of storage with 12.5mm hard drive support

The HP Mini 210 picked up two new color schemes, including preppy pink and white crystal.Dell latitude e6400 battery Preppy pink is the first use of 3-D PC surface technology. The plaid-like design has multiple layers which cast shadows and add depth compared to standard 2-D paint schemes. The new HP Mini 210 and Mini 110 with integrated battery will be available for buy June 15th. The starting prices are $354.99 and $279.99 respectively.
