Out with Klout

Set in a world where your every interaction is rated, Nosedive was a chilling episode of Black Mirror. The main character, Lacie, becomes so obsessed with her rating that it takes her to extremes, resulting in her score dropping to zero. Luckily, our everyday interactions aren’t scored, but your online ones can be.

Klout is a website and mobile app that determines social influence, by assigning a score of between one and 100. It does this using data from Bing, Facebook, Foursquare, Google+, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube and Wikipedia. You may remember our earlier blog post about it.

For ten years, Klout has been the go to place for measuring social influence but it’s ratings have been contested. At one point, Justin Bieber was ranked as the most influential person on social media ─ more influential than Barack Obama when he was president, something that was heavily criticised.

Owners Lithium Technologies have now announced their plans to shut Klout down on May 25, 2018. If you’re a regular reader of our blog, you’ll know that this is the same day that the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into force. Could this be a coincidence?

It could be. After all, Klout uses personal data from a range of sources and has access to all your publicly available content. However, a spokesperson from Lithium told TechCrunch that “the upcoming deadline for GDPR implementation simply expedited our plans to sunset Klout.”

You only have until May 25 to see what topics Klout ranks you as an expert on. However, it’s not goodbye from Lithium Technologies, which is now planning to launch a new social-impact score, using the artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities from Klout. Until the new platform is revealed, all of our scores will nosedive to zero.
