The sex of the baby can be known at 3 weeks of gestation

Scientists at the Tel Aviv Genetic Institute in Israel have shown that levels of hCG (MSHCG), the hormone that reveals whether a woman is pregnant in blood or urine tests, are usually one fifth higher in the first three weeks of pregnancy when the woman is brewing a girl.

The role of hCG (MSHCG) in early pregnancy is to maintain the function of the corpus luteum, a temporary structure formed in the ovary to generate estrogen and progesterone until the placenta takes over its production.

The researchers, coordinated by Yuval Yaron, director of the Prenatal Diagnostic Unit of the aforementioned institute, have pointed out that the fact that hCG (MSHCG) increases when it is a female fetus, before the development of the glands that produce fetal hormones , may be due to the way in which the placenta expresses proteins in the female, and not to the fact that the male suppresses the MSHCG, as had been pointed out in other investigations.
