Classic Shell, one of the best alternative start menus for Windows 10/8, will be released under open source so third parties can continue to develop it.
You already know the situation. The elimination of the button and start menu in Windows 8 centered the criticisms of the Modern UI user interface , more designed for uses with a touch screen than for desktop work with keyboard and mouse. Microsoft rectified and re-implemented it in Windows 8.1.
With the successive versions of Windows 10, Microsoft has been improving this menu betting on a hybrid design installed in Windows 7 but maintaining the Modern UI framework for applications, services and relevant information. Still, many still do not like it.
By then, several developers met the demand and created alternative menus. Some like Classic Shell existed from some years before, but they were downloaded by millions when Microsoft eliminated it in Windows 8 by offering a look and operation close to Windows 7, other additional tools and being totally free.
Now, the development changes course as announced by the person responsible . With each version of Windows 10, Microsoft makes changes to the system that require a new version of this Classic Shell. The developer says he does not have time and therefore will not offer new updates.
The good news is that the developer has decided to release it under an open license . The source code is available in Sourceforge and can be used by anyone.
