March 20 is recognized as National Proposal Day, and what better way to celebrate then to hear from some of our Sunrise lovebirds?
We got the inside scoop from some of our residents about their proposal stories.
Donna & Al
First up, meet Donna and Al, a couple who reside at Sunrise of Hermosa Beach, CA. These two met in college, began spending much of their time together, and before they knew it, they were saying “I do!” When we asked Donna and Al about their marriage and proposal, they both had lovely memories to share. “We met in history class of 350 people and we both attended UCLA. We spent our free time volunteering in a tiny church on campus. The year was 1947,” says Donna, “We went steady for four years and after graduation we got Married in June 1951. We have been married for 69 years, which is a blessing. We work hard together. This is the American dream!” Al then followed up with his memory. “I proposed to Donna in the 1940s. I don’t really remember the exact date. We both attended college for four years and then graduated. Soon after we decided to get married. I proposed to Donna by the ocean cliff, The Palisades.” In the picture shown above you will see these two dancing with big smiles because it has always been one of their favorite things to do. 69 years and these two continue to dance through life together!
Rose & Tom
Our next lovebirds are Rose and Tom, who live at Sunrise of Jackson, NJ. These two were married on March 9, 1996 and it actually happened to be the second marriage for both of them! When asked about the proposal, Tom told us how their marriage actually depended on an unusual circumstance, Rose’s home. Tom popped the question, and of course Rose said yes. But there was one condition that she had, and that was that she would only marry Tom after she sold her house! In time, the house was sold, and these two got their happily ever after with one another. Tom and Rose have been through a lot, but they have always have the most important thing, each other!
Joe & Doris
Meet Joe and Doris! These two live at Sunrise of Abington, PA, and they met when they were only 18 years old on a blind date, three years later, they tied the knot! Fast forward to 65 years later, they are still happily married and love being together. Joe described his first encounter with Doris as “being hit on the head with fairy dust” and when asked about the proposal, they didn’t have one! Joe and Doris knew how true their love was and in December 1950, the two made it happen at a New Year’s Party. Love knows no boundaries, and these two show that you don’t always need a proposal to make it perfect!
Paul & Berta
Last but certainly not least, we meet Sunrise of Burlingame, CA couple, Paul and Berta. These two had quite the journey together, and for both of them, it all started in Vienna, Austria. During this time, WWII had begun and Paul and Berta both fled with their families to Shanghai, China. It wasn’t until after their families were put into a Shanghai ghetto following Pearl Harbor that these two met. They got closer and fell in love,
Paul asked Berta’s parents for permission to ask Berta’s hand in marriage before proposing to her. A week before the proposal, Paul bought a silver spoon and got a goldsmith to melt down the silver to create two rings for both Paul and Berta. In the presence of their families, he proposed to her. Paul mentioned that they were poor then and he didn’t have flowers or dinner for her to celebrate the event but they were very happy. They got married five years later in Israel on Berta’s birthday July 6, 1949. These two have been in many different places throughout their marriage, but according to both of them, it never mattered where they were, as long as they were together.
We love all the love that we have throughout Sunrise – Happy National Proposal Day!
