When the sun set on June 13, 2019, the Des Moines Community lost a friend, mentor and champion – Eduardo (Ed) Pina.

Our family lost a Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather.

In 1952 while attending the University of Massachusetts, Ed met Norma in a Zoology class while dissecting a frog. In 1954 after completing his Master’s Degree, Ed and his wife Norma moved to the Northwest. He was starting a new career at The Boeing Company while continuing to work on his PhD at the University of Washington. On their journey to the Northwest, Ed learned from Norma that they would also be starting a family. Their first born was daughter Marci, followed by sons Gary and Matt, and another daughter Jennifer. The family moved to Des Moines in 1967.

As Ed’s career in leadership at The Boeing Company continued to move forward, he decided expand his contributions and use his talents to give back to the community. He served on the Des Moines Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors and later the Seattle-King County Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors.

In 1987 Ed was elected to the Highline School Board where he served for 12 years, many of those as board president and vice president. In 2004 Ed was elected to the Des Moines City Council. He served one term before deciding to retire to spend more time with his wife and family.

Ed was always looking for ways to help. He was sought out for his integrity, logic, compassion and ability to see topics from many angles.

He is survived by his wife of over 65 years Norma, his four children, five grandchildren, two great grandchildren and a Schnauzer ‘Chaps.’  Ed was loved and respected by many and will be missed.

MEMORIAL SATURDAY, AUG. 31
There will be a community Celebration of Ed’s Life at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug 31 in the Des Moines Beach Park Auditorium.
