Oliver Strümpfel won the title at a festival in Bavaria on Sunday, where he lugged the tankards weighing almost 70kg to take the record as part of the Maßkrugtragen challenge.

The 45-year-old nearly managed 31, but one glass fell at the last minute and another lost more than 10 per cent of its beer.

He was cheered by 1,500 spectators as he crossed the line to take the bizarre record at the Gillamoos Fair in Abensberg.

Mr Strümpfel told Reuters: “I first did 27, because I wanted to be sure and then at the end I said, ‘Let’s add another one and get over 30.’

“Unfortunately it didn’t quite work, but having managed to put 29 down…I think it’s amazing.”

Supporters shouted “Oli, Oli” as he made his way to finish line, beating his own previous record of 25 jugs in 2015.

According to the rules, no more than 10 per cent of the beer is allowed to slosh out of the glasses during the challenge.

To accomplish the feat, Mr Strümpfel, trained three or four times at the gym every week, concentrating on strengthening his back arms and shoulders.

A tax collector by trade, he also did shifts at beer festivals.

Mr Strümpfel added: “When I think about it, it’s 200 hours for about 40 seconds of walking”
