Currently there are close to 80,000 full time sworn-in police officers in California serving some 36 million people. To become a cop in California, you need to go through the Academy and the standards are tough. Let us review some of these requirements.
Police Academy Requirements in California
- While at least a high school diploma or GED is needed by most academies, some require you to have a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related course work.
- A Misdemeanor or felony conviction is an automatic disqualifier
- Candidates have to be at least 18 years of age
- Must have U.S. citizenship
- Must pass a physical examination to determine if the candidate passes the strict vision, hearing and general health requirements
- Applicants have to pass the physical agility test which usually include an obstacle course, push ups, sit ups, leg endurance and arm lift events.
