Rising prices of a refrigerant used in many heating and air systems are costing consumers as federal regulations slow its production to usher in an upgraded alternative.
Production of R-22, an aerosol propellant that has powered residential heating and air systems for about four decades, will slip in the next few years to 10 percent of its previous average annual output nationwide. As manufacturing and consumer costs for the Freon escalate, homeowners seeking repairs specifically for older air conditioners designed to operate on R-22 are deciding whether they can afford the dwindling resource.
Jake Woods, service manager at Homer Nine and Sons in Bridgewater, said it is “irresponsible” for specialists not to recommend a new unit for customers faced with leaks and other malfunctions. Read more
