Cycling Paradise on Hilton Head Island

Having earned the distinction of a GOLD LEVEL Biking Community by the League of American Bicyclists, Hilton Head Island is now one of the top 25 biking communities in the United Statesnbsp; Whether your perfect vacation is to ride on the beach, a lazy ride to see local sights or a brisk 10K on a road Bike, Hilton Head Island is a biking paradise, and you will find a biking experience on the Island to suit you. But our main goal is to keep you safe while you are visiting us and enjoying your vacation.nbsp; Always remember that even if you are on a pathway, anyone on a bike is subject to the same traffic laws as a vehicle. nbsp; What does this mean? nbsp;It means you must stop at stop signs and obey marked paths. Motorists have the right-of-way. nbsp; Before pulling out after you have stopped at a stop sign or crosswalk, always make eye contact with motorists to be sure they see you.nbsp; Be visible ndash; always wear bright clothing, and make sure your bike has reflectors and lights if you are riding at night.nbsp; Remember, you will be sharing our pathways with pedestrians so be sure to ride on the right-hand side and pass on the left. nbsp; When passing someone, always call out passing on your left. nbsp;nbsp; WHAT THE HECK IS A WEEHOO? Biking is a great family activity, and we want everyone to enjoy it, even if you have children who are too young to ride. nbsp; Most bike rental companies offer Tag-Alongs and WeeHoos.nbsp; Also known as Alleycats, Tag-Alongs are a single wheel attachment to an adult bike that lets kids up to 75 pounds ride along without pedaling.nbsp; But a WeeHoo, which is similar to a Tag-Along because it attaches to an adult bicycle, allows the child to sit in a seat with a backrest and safety harness. The child may pedal if they wishnbsp;but will be more secure than in a Tag-Along. nbsp; For those children without bicycle experience, this is a great alternativenbsp;and gives them a true biking experience. nbsp;WeeHoorsquo;s fit children from 2 to 8 years old with an adjustable seat; their maximum weight capacity is 75 pounds. nbsp;Helmets are strongly recommended for everyone. nbsp; Before you and your family start out on bikes to enjoy Hilton Head Island, please watch this Biking on Hilton Head Do and Donrsquo;ts video ... Now that you know the safety rules, and have your bikes and WeeHoos, here are a few suggestions for some fun bike rides, and a map to guide you. With nearly 60 miles of public pathways and nature trails to cycle, you will have no problem finding a ride you enjoy. First, donrsquo;t miss a ride on the beach.nbsp; When the tide is out, Hilton Head offers 12 miles of hard-packed beaches where you can ride and cruise along the beautiful Island shoreline. A little ldquo;beach bikingrdquo; tip - pedaling will be easier if you ride with the wind to your back, so start out riding into the wind and you will have an easier return trip with the wind to your back.nbsp; As a local, this is something I learned the hard way If you want a real taste of the Island, here are some of our parks to explore: Fish Haul Creek Parknbsp;-nbsp;Cycle through this remote 16-acre park at Fish Haul Creek with a maritime forest, wetlands, salt marsh and a beach. A shaded trail winds through live oaks to the sandy shore of Port Royal Sound. Barker Field Observation Decknbsp;-nbsp;Ride along the boardwalk behind Barker Field toward Port Royal Sound. An observation deck at the end of the boardwalknbsp;has expansive views across the Sound and you can see magnificent morning sunrises there. Greens Shell Community Parknbsp;-nbsp;Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this scenic park has an elevated boardwalk for biking with views of Skull Creek and Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. Bike over to the parks archeological gem - a large shell ring that encloses a Native American farming village, and picnic areas. Shelter Cove Community Parknbsp;-nbsp;Enjoy biking along the pathway through this park with a white granite memorial on the bank of Broad Creek honoring American veterans. Take in views over the marsh and creek at the observation deck, take a break on benches under the arbors, or shop the new Shelter Cove Outdoor Mall that continues to add new shops and restaurants where you can enjoy lunch or dinner. Villas for Sale in Shelter Cove Old House Creek Piernbsp;-nbsp;Ride your bike to this secluded fishing and crabbing pier with views across the Intercoastal Waterway. nbsp;Old House Creek Pier has a wildlife viewing area at the end where you can see schools of shrimp scamper across the water and the fiddler crabs dance down the mud bank. The pathway map below highlights the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an island-wide map on one side, and local route maps on the other. With 60 miles of leisure paths and 100 miles of protected public pathways, Hilton Head is a spectacular biking destination that I hope you will enjoy when you vacation with us, but please follow the safety rules and have a safe and fun vacation nbsp;Happy Pedaling*Bike Route Map Courtesy of the Town of Hilton Head Island.
