Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross initiated a 232 investigation to determine if automotive imports (including cars, SUVs, vans and light trucks, and automotive parts) negatively impact U.S. national security. This could lead to steep tariffs on imports of cars and car parts much like those levied on steel and aluminum imports. The Commerce Department will hold a public hearing on the investigation on July 19 and 20. The public comment period is open through July 6, 2018. Federal Register request for pubic comment and public comment form.
