Ask the Recruiter – When Will I Hear if I am Hired?

Flight Attendant Hiring Notification

Question:

I recently interviewed with Delta Airlines and thought the interview went quite well. However, now I am very concerned because it has been over two weeks and I have not heard anything. Should I contact the airline? What should I do? Thank you.

Answer:

We get this type of question quite frequently. It is not uncommon for an airline to wait several weeks before contacting applicants for a follow-up interview or for a class date. It all depends upon the needs of the airline at the time of the interview. When an airline is in desperate need of Flight attendants, due to retirements, turnover or expansion, it will expedite the hiring process. In these cases, airlines may conduct open house interviews and actually select individuals for second interviews that same day. Those who are selected for class dates could be contacted within a few days, either by phone or mail. In other cases, when urgency is not important, the hiring process will be quite lengthy. In this case, an airline may be interviewing for an “applicant pool” that they may draw from for future class dates. Since they are not in a hurry to hire, you probably won’t be contacted for quite some time.

To determine which scenario fits your interview, it might be a good idea to contact other applicants that you interviewed with (if you have their contact information) to see if they are still waiting to hear from the airline. You can also check the message boards to see how many classes have been hired. If you see that your friends are being called and that classes are being held, it might be a good idea to contact the recruiter that interviewed you for an update. This is why we say it is so important to get the recruiter’s contact information during the interview. If you are rejected, keep in mind that you will probably have to wait at least six months before you can reapply.

Good luck!
