Bad Career Advice College Grads Need to Ignore

Everyone has received bad Advice from well-meaning adults and more experienced relatives in their life, especially on the eve of their graduation. Some of this advice is really good and can help you get started on your career plans, while some can be misplaced and will place you on the wrong track. Here are some examples of bad career advice given to young college graduates regularly:

College prepares you for everything

This isn’t remotely true. While college education does give you a foundation to launch your career off of, you still need to gain practical skills. That is only something you can gain at a workplace after you have worked consistently for some time. College graduates don’t possess the practical experience or the soft skills required to succeed in this industry and often struggle to navigate the modern workplace environment. The best way to deal with this is to get a job that interests you and learn as much as you can from it. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from colleagues and managers and recognize that you have a lot to learn. That will help you gain the skills and experience you need to get ahead in your career.

Job interviews are easy

Job interviews are the most challenging and nerve-wracking aspect of the entire process. You behavior, answers, and responses to the interviewer will determine whether you get the job or not. Most parents and adults seek to ease your anxiety by assuring that job interviews are easy and your college degree will be impressive enough to see you sail through it. This advice can be damaging, especially if you take it seriously and don’t prepare well for the interview. Instead of believing their assurances, ask for helpful advice on how to respond to key interview questions. You can also read articles and guides online and prepare for the process. The more prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel. That might have an impact on your chances and help you succeed.

Get a stable job

This is one of the most common advice offered to new graduates. Some people believe that graduates should settle for the first job they get instead of trying follow their interests and passions. While you might have to temporarily settle for a job you don’t love just to pay the bills, it doesn’t mean you should give up on your dream entirely. You need to maintain the right balance between getting a job you love and getting enough money to survive and pay the bills.

Don’t worry about money

Some well-meaning adults will give the opposite advice to the one mentioned above and ask the graduates to pursue their dreams and not worry about the money. That’s harmful advice as well. You need to be careful and wise about money if you want to lead a comfortable life and not be laden with debt. Work on jobs that pay the bills but still try to find an occupation that appeals to you.

College graduates need to learn how to distinguish between good and bad advice and keep what’s useful.
