Many of you are aware that Appen is a well-known work at home employer that has hundreds of work from home jobs that remote workers can apply to from anywhere in the world.  One of the reasons that Appen is popular in the telecommuting world is the fact that all of their positions do not require you to talk on the telephone, plus you are compensated on a hourly basis (for most positions), you can set your own schedule as long as you meet their hourly requirement which is idea for stay at home moms and you can get a job without any experience.  But have you ever wondered, “what it would really be like working from home for Appen?”

An Honest Review about working from home for Appen as a Social Media Evaluator

Part of my preparations for maternity leave with my first child began with reading work from home blogs.  I wanted to learn more about making and saving money, as I wouldn’t receive a paycheck on leave from my regular career as a teacher.  In one article, I came across Appen and felt that it would be a good fit for me and my family’s schedule and lifestyle.  It seemed like it would be a great telecommuting job to make a little extra money while I stayed at home.

They had immediate opportunities for a position called a “social media evaluator”.  I applied, and was accepted.  The application process was simple, but time consuming.  In truth, it wasn’t too different from other reputable on-line telecommuting job applications, so I didn’t feel that the experience was too daunting.  One nice feature about this is that my information, both personal and professional, is saved to a profile with Appen.  Whenever I decide to apply to another job, I simply log-in, click on “apply”, and I’m good to go.  Training occurred withing two weeks of applying, and all training was done online.  The training for this social media evaluator job was paid, so that was an obvious score.  I was paid in two weeks and the timeliness of it was really great.  The training wasn’t too rigorous, was explained really well, and I was able to transition into the job really easily.  Acutaly work began relatively soon after training was completed, which was exciting because I knew I’d be making money soon enough.  As part of the job, we had to keep track of the hours we worked, and even if we went over the time limits for the job during the day, we were only paid for four hours.  This wasn’t always the case in reality, because there were common technical issues and times when they would assign more things to evaluate than the job description entailed.  The technical issues and extra assignments would bring me over the four hours pretty consistently.  We couldn’t end work once we hit the four hours, as it was necessary to complete the unit of work first, even if the four hours had already been spent.

The specific aspects of the job are things I will briefly explain, since I signed a non-disclosure agreement about it.  The assignment required that we evaluate the  “impact” of random social media posts.  There wasn’t much to think about in terms of our feelings, but too often the posts we had to write about were repeated, so it became boring to rewrite the same things over and over again.  The job asked for four hours a day, broken into two hour chunks with at least an hour break in between.  Theoretically, you could work two hours in the morning, and two hours later the same day, however, the four hours had to be completed in the same day.  The job also required working five days a week, allowing for two of the days to be worked on the weekend.  I always felt that the money was worth the ease of work and flexibility of work days, as workers make $10 to $12 per hour.

I ultimately ended my time with this job because I had my child, but I wish I followed through with my email exchange with an associate there to ask for some leave time to come back to the job.  It was a great, simple job that paid well enough for the work requirements.  Another nice aspect of working for Appen is that I still get emails from them on a regular basis, however, I haven’t been able to get a job as good as the social media evaluator.  I believe it is because I had to end my time the way that I did.  Ultimately, I believe that Appen is a great company to work for, and the salary made from the work has the potential to benefit anyone who works for them.
