‘Google Hire’ – Whats it mean for Recruitment and LinkedIn ?

Hot of the press is Google’s recent announcement that they are looking to provide a new feature for both job seekers and employers. “Google Hire” rumours started circulating in March when eagle eyed searchers noticed a domain by the name of hire.withgoogle.com. The domain directed the user towards a service called “Google Hire”. Although this name is not yet official, it has been strongly suggested that it could be confirmed as the name of the new service soon, despite the name not appearing during Google’s unveiling of their “Google for jobs.”

The two websites may yet be linked, but that is still unknown as of yet. So far, we know that at Google’s I/O developer conference, Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai emphasised the urgency to address talent shortages by connecting job seekers with the relevant employers.

Google have announced that their new job search engine will cover all jobs, in any field, from entry – level to upper management. Google have stated that their advanced AI and machine learning technological capabilities will allow them to utilise the job searching engines more effectively than their competitors i.e Linkedin. They claim that this more advanced tech will allow them to better understand how job titles are related to each other.

An example Google provided of these new search engine tools, was that if someone chooses to search a generic term such as “marketing” Google will now be able to understand that job titles such as SEO, PPC Manager and Content Strategists, will be all linked and related. Rather than competing against other well-established job search engines, Google plans to initially partner with the likes of LinkedIn, Facebook, CareerBuilder Monster, Glassdoor and others. It may be noted that they have only stated they will “initially” work alongside these and the long terms strategy is still unclear. Is it more likely they will expand into their own independent proposition once they have covered the groundwork and have built some popularity, brand alignment and market traction?

Searchers will be able to filter their job listings according to a number of attributes. They can also highlight aspects using google’s advanced engines which other sites would not be able to use. For example, when searching and looking for a job, you would be able to determine your daily commute time should you choose to work for said company. The ability to submit a job application directly from Google was also mentioned.

Google for jobs has been tested and has already been rolled out in the United States, but it is expected to reach the United Kingdom and Europe very soon.

In an ever evolving Recruitment market, is this the most significant announcement to hit the recruitment industry in the last few years? It’s certainly going to make things interesting, but for us at Better Placed how much impact it will have is questionable. It will most likely become just another channel to be used for talent attraction or as a candidate, searching for their next job. It won’t change the fact that the recruitment industry is becoming faceless and less relationship-driven and although Better Placed will embrace this, along with any other developments in online recruitment techniques, we won’t lose sight of what we believe is essential to being the best-connected people in the market – meeting people face to face and building true authentic relationships. This ethos to recruitment is something we call The Real Network.
