Top interview tips for Digital Marketers

After a busy week prepping candidates for interviews I thought it would be helpful to write a blog on a few simple, yet effective tips on what line managers are looking for in the Digital space.

There are obvious ‘do’s and don’ts’ at interviews, however this blog is focused on the nature of Digital Marketing and how to best present yourself when meeting with a Head of Department.

PREPARE!

Preparation is key!

The only way to ensure that you come across as the confident candidate you know you are is if you’ve covered the following points.

Researching the company is obvious, however, what should you be researching for?

You should try to understand what the brand is trying to achieve through their digital channels and investigate all possible marketing avenues like Twitter, SEO, newsletter subscriptions and LinkedIn. Once you have a good understanding, think about how your experience fits the role’s requirements and note down a few simple points that you’d like to highlight.

You want to stand out at interview!

Going the extra mile always pays off. Have a think about how you could improve their digital marketing strategy, focussing on the channels your role will require you to work on. If you get asked for suggestions in the interview you can demonstrate your creativity.

Tip

Remember to keep your notes short and to the point, this will help you to deliver the information clearly when you are face to face.

KNOW YOUR STUFF!

What does a Head of Department want to know?

It’s great when the conversation flows and you can talk openly, however it is important to remember that you need to back it up with facts. The best way to demonstrate this is to compare your achievements to the requirements listed in the job brief.

Knowing your metrics will build instant credibility!

Being able to talk about your KPIs and ROI is really what makes one candidate stand out from the rest. As a digital marketing pro you should be savvy with your numbers, showing that you can analyse your performance and can clearly demonstrate your strengths.

Tip

Build your stories around your successes, keep them short and simple starting with:

-Objective

-Achievements

-Measurements

SHOW YOUR PASSION!

Let your personality shine!

Once you’ve fully prepared for your interview and have all the important facts and figures fresh in your mind, you’ll be more at ease, allowing you to be yourself. The classic saying is that ‘people buy people’ and that couldn’t be truer. The hiring manager will be looking for someone who fits into the culture of the business as well as the team, so showing your passion and enthusiasm for what you do will go a long way.

The digital world is bursting with enthusiasts and talent!

People who are truly immersed in the digital field will often have their own examples of content, blogs, social media sites or personal projects.

Tip

Be prepared to showcase your work by providing links, if you don’t have any examples it is worth looking at building an online portfolio.
