No Tribune? How ROH Visibility Grows from Here

ROH COO Joe Koff
With news that the apparent merger of Sinclair Broadcasting and Tribune has dim hopes of actually happening, how does SBG, and more importantly to us wrestling fans, ROH, move forward? Based on past practices, lets examine 5 possibilities that could be undertaken by Sinclair:

1) Sinclair will remain in constant acquisition mode. Even with a pending deal for Tribune, SBG will seek out the right deals for more television exposure. This will partly rest on the UHF discount continuing and FCC ownership allowance rulings. As SBG acquires new properties, ROH is sure to follow.

2) ATSC 3.0. Sinclair is heavily involved in the technology development and rollout of a next generation television standard. With this rollout, comes the possibility of more bandwidth for digital sub-tier channels.  An ROH television network is not a pipe dream.

3) Acquisition of a cable network. With heavy regulations on over the air broadcast television preventing a merger, there are no such regulations on cable. Look for Sinclair to kick the tires on acquiring another cable network. Rumors were that Sinclair was looking into a creating a more conservative version of FOX news. If there is a cable network that is acquired, look for ROH to appear.

4) The continued growth of digital sub tier channels. As stations like STADIUM, Comet, CHARGE! grow in visibility and market penetration, ROH will be there along for the ride.

5) Over the Top Platform growth. In addition to Honor Club, Sinclair is expected to launch other in-house over the top (OTT) internet stations. Like with other platforms, ROH will likely have some presence.

Although we as wrestling fans are saddened when any company we support has a serious roadblock thrown its way in growth (albeit with serious concerns about the parent company), this is not the end of ROH’s growth and exposure.
