The Most Common Health Mistakes

Being healthy is no easy task; why do you think over 64% of adults are classed as overweight or obese in the UK? However, for the 36% of us who are doing it right, we’re still making a few mistakes here and there due to false information or a lack of education in this area. I am going to point out the most common mistakes people make regarding all aspects of their physical health.

Only eating organic

This isn’t to say that organic is bad for you, there has been a lot of research proving its worth. What I am saying is that it isn’t always necessary, some foods simply don’t need to be organic, and you’re actually wasting money buying it. Did you know that organic foods such as eggs, spices, avocado and any frozen food stored in a plastic bag add no value to your health than the regular versions? Buying them will, however, leave a burning hole in your pocket.

Driving with your windows down

Okay, I know this is strange, but bear with me. You may not have realised this before, but we expose our lungs to a lot of harmful gases produced by cars. Studies have shown that if we spend 6% of our day driving with the windows down, we will expose our bodies to 45% of the pollutants we would normally inhale in a 24-hour period. It gets worse when you’re in a busy city too. Think about that next time you want to put your car window down.

Not sticking to medication

When people are given medication they tend to keep on taking it until they feel better and then stop, but sometimes they feel better before their doctor or prescriber have said they should stop. Not finishing a course of medication can cause a wide variety of repercussions depending on the severity of your illness, from headaches to a return of your original symptoms or even seizures. One of the worst things that stopping medication too early can do is create resistant bacteria, which can fight off the antibiotics, multiply and spread.

Brushing your teeth straight after a meal

When you eat highly acidic foods it softens the enamel on your Teeth. This is often compared to wet sandstone in terms of texture. If you brush your teeth straight after eating these foods it can speed up the effect the acid has on your teeth whilst eroding the eroding the layer beneath. To combat this all you need to do is wait 30-60 minutes until you brush your teeth after eating. If you’re really pressed for time you could rinse your mouth out with water beforehand.

Eating late at night

Lots of people like to snack late at night, but this could well be what is stopping you from losing weight – perhaps even the reason why you’re gaining it. It is suggested that you shouldn't leave a gap of more than 10-12 hours of the day between eating, so in other words if you eat breakfast at 6:30 you should be eating dinner by 18:30. This aids in our abilities to metabolise calories.
