Interview with Sidepreneur Drew Tetz

I love side hustles that stem from full-time jobs. Meaning, you’re in your day job for a significant chunk of your day, week after week…and you eventually notice something that can be improved and you start a Side Business around it. You solve a pain you have, or that you see, and then monetize it.

Today’s interview is with a sidepreneur that did exactly that. His name is Drew Tetz and he’s a CPA by day and finance app company at night. His product is called EZ Track Expense and here’s his story…

1. What Is Your Day Job And What Is Your Side Business?

My day job is as a CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant) who works at a small to medium sized accounting firm. There I do file review and tax planning for a variety of clients. My side Business is an expense tracking app called EZ Track Expense for the smart phone, designed for the small and medium sized businesses we deal with. I mainly focus on sales and brand growth.

2. How Did You Choose Your Side Business?

The side business was started when we discovered the need for clients to better organize their receipts and expenses. Too often we found them bringing in a box of receipts and nothing was organized (type of expenses, personal vs business etc). Initially we started to give them envelopes to put receipts into, but then we found an app developer and created an app to organize expenses.

3. How Do You Find Time To Work On Your Side Business?

A lot of hours worked. For us, we had the opportunity to work a lot of hours. The founder was an older gentleman with kids out of the house, so he was able to work more on the start up without a young family to worry about. I was in my twenties with no family, so I was also able to work more hours. Even on vacations we were reading books on apps and still working on it. I guess we got lucky in that we could work more hours than the regular person starting up a Side Job.

4. What’s Working For You Right Now In Growing Your Side Business?

A mix of two things. The first is online marketing and getting out to a wide audience of people. We focus our social media for targeted groups such as realtors and small business owners, but we can still access hundreds of them each day.

The second is face to face directed discussions with our own clients. Whenever they come in for meetings for their year ends, we can involve the app (our side job) if the timing or need is right. We do not force anything on the client, but if the discussion arises we will let them know.

We have also started going out to larger clients offices and doing demonstrations to targeted employees.

5. What Advice Can You Give Someone Who Is Thinking About Starting A Side Business?

Start a side job that compliments your main business. Every main business has aspects of it that can be solved by creating a side start up. You will have a greater chance of seeing these opportunities by being vigilante at your main job. If something is repetitive or labor intensive, perhaps it can be solved by technology that you can create.

There is also opportunities to start service jobs based off your main job. You just have to always be looking for opportunities and never assume that just because something is done a certain way, it cant be improved.

I would be hesitant to recommend starting a side job unrelated to your main job, because you might be getting into an area you are not knowledgeable on. You may see people being successful in certain areas of business and be tempted to join in, but stick to what you know and grow that.
