A famous controversial novel by Perumal Murugan bagged Sahitya Akademi Award for exceptional quality English translation. The novel titled as One Part Woman was translated by Aniruddhan Vasudevan.

Sources say that the translated version of the book was nominated for the award by a jury that consisted of Dr Githa Hariharan, K Satchidanandan and AR Venkatachalapathy.

In2014, this book became a subject to many controversies, as there were many groups that oppsed Murugan’s work by claiming that this novel degraded a Hindu deity and also insulted Tamil Nadu women, belonging to the Kongu Vellala Gounder community.

As time passed by, the groups showed their violent side. Therefore, Murugan withdrew from the world of writing. Not just this, the novel was also said to be banned by the the Namakkal district administration. However, the ban was declared as illegal in the year 2016, by the Madras High Court.
