3 Major Types of Brain Injuries

Brain Injury Lawyer in Phoenix, AZ

The term “brain injury” refers to the occurrence of an insult to the Brain which causes damages. Brain injuries are quite different from bodily injuries, and each brain injury is unique to its cause and to the person suffering. Sometimes, brain injuries aren’t even immediately recognizable. Below are three major types of brain injuries:

  1. Concussions & Contusions

Perhaps the most common, concussions have only recently been treated as serious brain injuries. They are usually considered a mild-traumatic brain injury (MTBI), whereas more severe brain injuries are considered traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Concussions are usually caused by two factors:  1) an impact to the head, or 2) violently shaking the head and upper body. Sometimes concussions can cause loss of consciousness, but not always. Symptoms include headache, confusion, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, delayed response, and more. Concussions are common in contact sports, like football.

Similarly, contusions are also caused by an impact to the head which then leads to the bruising of the brain. Just like a normal bruise, the blood vessels of the brain may break and leak when struck suddenly or with sufficient force. Depending on the force of impact, the brain contusion may occur on the same side of the head where the blow hit, or it may occur on the opposite side as a result of the brain slamming into the skull. Symptoms also include loss of consciousness, confusion, tiredness, agitation, and even brain swelling. Contusions are common in auto accidents and slip and fall injuries.

  1. Penetrating Brain Injury

As the name indicates, this type of brain injury occurs when an object pierces the skull. As a result, the object, hair, skin, and/or skull fragments may come into contact with the brain. This sort on injury is certainly considered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and can be quite lethal. Common causes include gunshot wounds to the head, slip and fall accidents, auto accidents, and in some extreme cases, sports-related injuries.

  1. Lack of Oxygen Brain Injury

When the brain hasn’t received enough oxygen to operate properly, an anoxic brain injury may occur. After 4-5 minutes without oxygen, brain cells can begin to die leading to brain damage.  Since the brain receives oxygen from blood, the most common cause of this sort of injury is the lack of blood flow to the brain. Therefore, an anoxic brain injury may occur because of a blockage, like a blood clot, heart attack, or stroke. In instances of poisoning, choking, drowning, or suffocation, blood may be flowing to the brain, but the blood itself is not carrying a sufficient amount of oxygen, resulting in brain injury.
