Super Mario Run is Finally Available on Android

Nintendo’s big break into smartphone gaming, Super Mario Run, is no longer exclusive to iOS. The app landed on Google Play yesterday, alongside an iOS update that makes more of the game free to play.

The Android version is identical to the iOS version, which includes pricing — like before, a short part of the beginning of the game is free, with the rest of the game priced at $9.99. But, with a new iOS update, Nintendo is getting more generous. The first four levels are now free, instead of just the first three, which holds for both iOS and Android. The $9.99 price tag for the rest of the game has not been changed.

Super Mario Run performed fairly well in its three months as an iOS exclusive. Last month during Nintendo’s quarterly financial report, we learned that the game had been downloaded 78 million times, with about 5 percent of those downloads turning into full $9.99 purchases — sounds low, but that’s about par for the course for freemium games. Getting back in the news and getting on Android will likely give Nintendo another fair chunk of change — it’s not a game that will drive revenue for years to come, but it’s a promising start.

While Nintendo has long been averse to the idea of microtransactions, that’s clearly changed. While they likely won’t come to Super Mario Run, optional purchases are a big part of the new Fire Emblem mobile game, which could end up outearning Super Mario Run in the long term. In the days after it came out, Fire Emblem Heroes pulled in $5 million, so it might not take all that long.
