Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel: Government (8 - 10 Years)

Description:
Reporting directly to the Vice President and General Counsel, the Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel will provide legal advice and guidance to the agency on a broad range of matters. The AVP and Deputy GC will partner closely with other departments throughout the agency and with Save the Children International to help oversee and manage domestic and overseas legal needs and exposures while seeking to achieve the agency's programmatic and other aims.

The AVP and Deputy GC will be a generalist, able to learn new areas of the law quickly and to apply those learnings in complex settings. Within this generalist practice, specific duties will include: regulatory compliance including federal grants and contracts, general litigation, lobbying and advocacy, tax exempt matters, employment law, general corporate advice and contract drafting and negotiations, intellectual property law, and advising senior management on governance and corporate compliance matters. Specific responsibilities may be added or changed over time.

The AVP and Deputy GC will work closely with a small, closely-knit legal team, and will need the ability to: juggle multiple priorities in a fast paced environment, be self-motivated and able to prioritize and work under pressure, be detail-oriented with excellent follow-through, and be able to actively manage outside counsel. He or she will have demonstrated the ability to work closely with others in a range of roles both internally and externally, and will possess superb verbal and written communication and negotiation skills, excellent analytical and problem solving skills, the ability to think strategically and possess excellent business judgment. He or she must be able to respond quickly to emergencies and complex issues as they arise¸ and must possess a results-oriented attitude that seeks to achieve the aims of the agency while managing legal exposures. Some travel, including some international travel, will be required, and he or she must be comfortable with and have sensitivity to working with a variety of individuals in cross-cultural situations. Clear dedication to and interest in the mission of Save the Children is essential.

The Deputy GC will serve as a member of the Extended Senior Management Team and will help advise the crisis management team during emergencies.

Requirements:
A JD is required from an accredited law school with current qualification to practice in Washington, DC or Connecticut, or with such qualifications to be acquired shortly after joining Save the Children. A minimum of eight to ten years in-house, firm or government legal experience is required, with four or more years of in-house, non-profit legal department experience preferred. Experience with federal grants and contracts, corporate contracts, and tax exempt regulation strongly desirable. This position will be based in either the Connecticut or Washington, DC offices of the agency, and some travel will be required between agency offices.
