Family Fun (for all ages!) in Miami

Looking for something fun to do with your grandkids in Miami this weekend? We have a few suggestions for things to do that will keep you, your wallet, and the little ones happy:

If you want to have a great time indoors, the Miami Children’s Museum is one of Miami’s most popular attractions for children of all ages. It is loaded with two floors’ worth of interactive exhibits, including a life-size cruise ship, the Castle of Dreams, a two-story sand castle, and occupational role-playing zones, including a construction site and a veterinary clinic. You will find enough activities here to inspire your grandchildren for about 3 hours if they want to see everything, and many visitors wind up making a day of it. Once you’ve explored the museum, you can pick up a souvenir from the Kid Smart Educational Gift Shop, and you can grab a bite to eat any time during your visit at the built-in Subway. The Museum features a free day for everyone on the third Friday of every month from 3 to 9 p.m. Normal admission is $18 for adults and children, and just $14 for Florida residents. Infants under 12 months always get in free.

If the weather’s just right and you’re looking for an outdoor adventure, head over to Biscayne National Park, a 172,000-acre wonderland that is the largest marine park in the national park system. Here, visitors can watch for dolphins, manatees, and the Cassiopeia Upside-Down Jellyfish. The park offers glass-bottom boat tours, guided canoe or kayak trips along the shore and relaxing scenic lookouts complete with rocking chairs. The park hosts the Family Fun Fest on the second Sunday of each month from January to May, which is a free program featuring hands-on activities for children and families.

How about a sugary treat at the end of the day? Check out Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor, an old-fashioned Americana-themed Florida favorite that has been serving extravagant desserts for over 50 years. The menu is huge, and boasts options to please just about everyone, including many varieties of ice creams, sundaes, sparkling sodas, parfaits, floats, banana splits, and “spectacular goblets”. The menu offers sugar-free and dairy-free options, and is not at all limited to desserts; Jaxson’s also features a wide variety of non-dessert foods, including entrées, sandwiches and burgers, and even vegetarian options. They’re located right off the highway in Dania Beach, about 20 minutes north of downtown Miami.
