GoJek has launched its beta service in Singapore. Riders can book  a trip beginning and ending in the eastern or south-central parts of Singapore.

For DBS Debit/Credit card users, they can get an exclusive ‘S$5 off for 2 rides voucher’ and will be placed on the priority waitlist. After downloading the app, users may have to wait for up to few weeks, before they can start booking rides. While this is frustrating for many, one has to understand that the app is only in beta stage. We believe that GoJek will improve its onboarding progress for users and the wait is worthwhile.

As the GoJek app is in the Beta stage, one can expect that it will take a few weeks before more users are able to gain access to the app. To date, over 20,000 drivers has expressed interest in signing up for the new ride-hailing and promos will be unleased in the initial period.

Ride-hailing competition

With ride-hailing alternatives such as GoJek , Ryde , Tada, Kardi , competition will be fierce in the next few months. However, with the concept of mutual forbearance, it is more likely that there will be a reduction in the intensity of competition by end of 2019. 

Ride-hailing app will coexist with taxi companies, working hand-in-hand with the incumbents to improve the transportation sector in South-East Asia.

Potentially the greatest threat to ride-hailing app is disruption in another sector that draws away these freelance drivers to another lucrative industry. Fundamentally, changes in regulation, will also change the entire landscape of the ride-hailing industry.
