Recently Ponds came up with this campaign where they were promoting skin care cream which was black in color for a cleaner skin. It was unusual because face creams are often associated with pinks and peaches, especially if it’s for women. Activated Carbon was the main ingredient in it. So, what is this activated carbon and how can one use it at home?
What is Activated Carbon for me?
Next time when you see your water filter being serviced, the black powder in filter is activated carbon. The deodorizer in your refrigerator contains that too.
It’s not coal; it’s ‘activated’ form of coal. It ‘adsorbs’ (not absorbs) impurities but do not use the residue of the filter bed.
How can I use it?
Face pack for acne– If your sweat glands are giving you a tough time in this sultry weather; try the carbon face pack
• 1 tablespoon of activated carbon
• Few drops of water
Make a thick paste with this and apply all over your face. Let it dry and then just wash it with tap water. You can do this twice a week to get rid of acne.
Teeth whitener– In ancient times when toothpastes were not invented, people used to clean their teeth with residue of bonfire and some sea salt because activated carbon can make the impurities stick on its surface (adsorb) and it gives you a shiny white teeth.
• Pinch of activated carbon
• Sea salt
• Regular toothpaste
Spread your regular toothpaste on your toothbrush and then dab some activated carbon and sea salt on it. Brush your teeth now. Rinse you teeth well and you can see the difference yourself. This is a money saving tip for coffee lovers and even smokers.
Eye Liner/Eye shadow: This is a simplest way to use activate carbon. Wet your thin angular eye shadow brush with some water and then dab some activated carbon on it. Get rid of the extra powder by tapping it on the back side of your palm and you can use it as an eye shadow or eye liner. Adding some glitter can be a good idea.
Face Scrub– This is what I call a magnet mask. It acts like a magnet to all the impurities of the face. It takes away all the dirt and dust leaving you with a cleaner skin. You have to do it few times to see the results.
• 2 tbs Activated carbon
• ½ tbs Aloe Vera gel
• Few drops of rose water
• Some sea salt
Mix all this in a paste form and apply it on your face, Scrub it gently for exfoliation and let it dry. You may feel your skin is stretched and stiff. Wash it with cold water and you will find a cleaner smoother skin. You can make this scrub and store in the refrigerator for a week.
Where Do I buy this Activated Carbon?
It’s easy; you can buy it from any medicine warehouse, cold store or online from EBay or Shop clues. It’s cheap and easy to store. Please don’t use barbeque coal or hookah coal as a substitute as they may have some carcinogenic properties.
