MAINTAINING YOUR ASPHALT

If your asphalt surface is well-maintained, then it offers many years of durability. But, with harsh weather conditions in Toronto, asphalt is subjected to an enormous threat. Under the influence of freeze/thaw cycles and water infiltration, it tends to Crack, swell and buckle.

Once your asphalt is damaged, water can seep into your pavement causing serious issues to the molecular composition of the asphalt. So, what do you think? Is this kind of asphalt damage is irreparable? Not necessarily…

If the asphalt defects affects only a limited area, then you can correct yourself or hire a asphalt contractor to do the work. If you need to asphalt crack repair for your surface, Main Infrastructure has the equipment to help you get the job done right.

Here we are sharing some tips that will help you to choose the right repair option for your damaged asphalt.

First Aid for Asphalt

When there are cracks, holes or other asphalt damages that appear on the asphalt structure, the first & foremost action you should take is to fix the problem as soon as possible after they are noticed. This will help you to prevent them from spreading.

Every new crack helps to provide a new path for water to seep into the sub grade and damage the asphalt structure. In order to fix these cracks in a timely manner to protect the asphalt durability, there are simple actions you can take, depending on the nature of the problem.

SMALL CRACKS (Less than ¾ inch.)

Small cracks are those cracks that are between ½ inch and ¾ of an inch wide. These types of cracks typically don’t need to be routed. So they are just cleaned and sealed.

  • In order to fill small cracks, you need to use rubberized asphalt emulsion crack sealer.
  • Apply it by pouring carefully from the container. The mix will need to be more or less liquid depending on the dimensions of the crack.
  • Let the filler allow to dry over the affected area.

MAJOR CRACKS (More than ¾ Inch.) Or Pothole

Large cracks are those cracks that are larger than ¾ of an inch wide. These types of cracks are more challenging because they are needed to be properly filled with asphalt or cut out and repaved.

  • If the crack you need to patch is deeper than two inches, then firstly you need to fill the crack up to two inches with small crushed gravel and pack it.
  • Next, you will fill the crack using cold mix asphalt specially designed to repair these types of cracks.
  • Compact manually according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • For better results, finish leveling the asphalt by placing your vehicle over the asphalt.

NOTE: Hot Pour asphalt compound is best to repair these types of cracks which are wider or less than 2 inches.
