New Survey Reveals Which Provinces Have Canada’s Worst Roads

Tags: road

MONTREAL— Potholes are considered ubiquitous in Canada as it is estimated that 26% of Canadian roads are found in poor or very poor condition. Every year the city fixes 50,000 potholes on the roads.

A Statistics Canada survey of the country’s road infrastructure has confirmed what Quebecers have known all along – good chunk of the province road network remains in a pitiful state.

Last week, according to nationwide public infrastructure survey, it included an inventory of publicly owned road assets by province.

An annual survey has identified most of the highways, main arteries, collector roads and local roads. And Quebec respondents were more inclined than counterparts elsewhere to answer “poor” or “very poor” when asked to assess the quality of roads in the province.

According to government agency, “a poor road exhibits a condition which is below standard and a large portion of the network exhibits significant deterioration” where a very poor road “is unfit for sustained service.”

There was an exception that was Nova Scotia, where disenchantment was much higher in most of the categories.

According to a study that was held in 2016, conducted jointly with infrastructure Canada, it was graphed 1500 municipal and provincial organization across the country.

According to the provincial report that was held by last March, it clearly shows that nearly more than half of Quebec’s roads were in poor shape and its needs to be repaired.

The government says that it would require to spend a $1.5 billion dollars alone to fix its crumbling streets, highways and overpasses.

Generally, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities has set the price for eliminating the national infrastructure deficit at $123 billion.

Some “fact-based encouragement” has done by the Conference Board of Canada. Investments have risen in recent years, but not by enough.

‘This change has to be done’

The government is ready to fix the poor condition of the roads. Only the biggest concern was in the early 2000s when we had lot of assets that were deteriorating because they have been built maybe 30 or 40 years ago.

Governments are very good at investing in an asset and building but when it’s time for maintenance and repairing and renovation, they just simply ignore.

The province has committed that they should spend billions of dollars in rebuilding the roads entirely, instead of patching them up.

Couillard said “You have probably noticed that the same report shows there’s been a very considerable progression in the number of roads in Quebec that are in good condition.”

“I think its 17 percentage points higher than in 2014. That’s good news but is it good? No. We have to do more. A lot of our roads are not in good condition. But we’ve never made as much progress as in recent years.”

In the coming months, statistics of Canada plans to release other figures on infrastructure assets and hopes to the survey this year.

According to 2016 figures, it been said that Canada road network was enough to circle the earth’s equator 19 times.

Nearly one-half of roads were located in Ontario and Alberta, with the two provinces accounting for just under a quarter of the country’s road network.

Also, a little more than 22 per cent of roads had been built since 2000.

Regardless of the cause, preventative maintenance could drastically reduce potholes and the have developed a new system which can gauge when and where such maintenance is needed.
