Advantages of Velveteen Fabric

What is Velveteen?

Velveteen (velveret) is a type of Fabric made from cotton. It is imitation Velvet used in women’s and kid’s garments. It is also used in making bedspreads and draperies.

Velveteen is made by the filling-pile method. In this method, the bare weave is used as a base and extra fillings are floated over four or five warps. After weaving is complete, the floats are cut and their ends are thoroughly brushed up to form a downy pile nearly one-eighth inch long. The back of the fabric is smooth and shows the fundamental weave. In addition, velveteen has a fuller body than velvet and that’s why it is not as easily draped as velvet.

Difference between Velvet and Velveteen

Velvet is a woven fabric and its loom is rather different from the usual loom. It is woven in a pile which gives it the distinctive feel. Velvet is easy to drape because it is not heavy. The pile of velvet is long. It is made with a variety of materials like wool, linen, mohair and silk and that is why velvet is very lustrous and shiny.

Velveteen is made of cotton fabric. It has more body and it is not very easy to drape. The pile of velveteen is shorter and much heavier than velvet. Moreover, it has much less shine when compared to real velvet. The reason behind the less sheen is that it is made from cotton, unlike velvet which is made from expensive fabrics.

Advantages of Velveteen Fabric

Affordable

Velveteen is an affordable fabric because it was not made from the idea of luxury; rather the concept was driven from practicality. Velvet and Velveteen are essentially similar because they are made using the same method. The only thing that sets them apart is the fabric used in their manufacturing.

Stretch

It is made from cotton fabric which makes it somewhat pliable. That is why it has more ‘give’ or stretch. Thus, it fabric can be used for the purposes that need a slightly stretchy cloth. Whereas, velvet is specifically used only for those products where there should be no stress positioned on the fabric.

Longer Life

When compared to velvet, it is much easier to preserve and that is why it has a longer life. Moreover, because of its affordability, it wouldn’t make you to claw at your eyes if anything happens to a dress that is made of velveteen.

Washable

Unlike velvet, it is washable. You can wash it using any washing machine. This is not the case with velvet. Try doing this to your velvet dress and you’re washing away all your money.

Although velvet has a unique charm of its own but not everyone can afford it because of its high cost. In its place, our class fabric fills in almost all the upbeat features at an affordable cost.

So, if you are looking for substitutes of velvet for saving on costs, you should definitely go for velveteen because it is an ideal choice.
