What is iMessage? How To Enable on iPhone, iPad & Mac

Imessage is an instant messaging service provided by Apple started in 2011 with iOS 5. iMessage allows you to quickly and easily send a text Message, video, picture, sound and your current location to other people using iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Mac.

You can also send standard carrier SMS/MMS text and picture messages to anyone. It uses wifi, cellular data or another form of internet access to send and receive messages.

iMessage service is accessible through the Messages app on an iPhone or iPad running iOS 5 or later, on Mac running OS X Mountain Lion or later. So for use this service in the iOS device only one requirement is your device is running iOS 5 or later.

When you send messages via iMessage, first the iOS device messages app identify the receiver of the message and automatically send the messages via iMessage if the receiver device uses iOS 5 or later.

But if the receiver device doesn’t have iOS 5 then message send via regular text messaging service. You cannot delete the message on another device so always careful what you want to send to other. But you can delete the message on your device.

Difference between iMessage and Text Messages

There is a major difference between iMessage and normal text message is they use internet connection for communication. And you cannot send the iMessage the to a person who is using an android device. Because it is specially developed for Apple users.

iMessage provide the recipient status like sent, delivered and read. In a normal text message, your carrier does not provide these type of status. We can easily distinguish the iMessage and regular message reply because the iMessage replies appear in a blue shaded bubble and regular message replies appear in a green colored bubble.

We can also use this service to send group messages to multiple people for free. The best part is messages app allow you to forward iMessage to one or multiple contacts. You can also copy the contents and paste into an entirely new message.

How to activate iMessage?

Before start using iMessage service and sending a text message, videos, location and audio first you need to set it up on your iOS device. If you are using iCloud service on your iPhone or iPad device then it’s a chance to iMessage is automatically activated for you. But if your service is still not activated then you can easily set up by following below steps.

  • Open setting app on your iPhone or iPad device.
  • Scroll down and find the Message option just click on it.
  • Now flip the ON/OFF switch next to turn on iMessage service on your device.
  • After that, it will automatically fetch your mobile number or apple id.
  • If you don’t have apple id then you can create a new one from the official Apple website.
  • That’s it now your iMessage service is activated.

After enabling this service you can also activate the option “Send as SMS” under the message setting. Now your iMessage automatically send a text message.

During activation process sometimes users are facing error like iMessage waiting for activation. But don’t worry you can easily fix this error by a sign in and out your apple id or by resetting your iPhone or iPad device.

How To Retrieve Deleted iMessages

There are so many ways to retrieve deleted iMessage but you can retrieve via iCloud. You need to just follow below step by step process.

  • First login to iCloud with your ID and password.
  • Click on text message option.
  • After that in your iPhone device go to setting > iCloud and turn on a text message.
  • Now you will see pop up and select the “Keep on My iPhone” option.
  • At last click on Merge option and wait for few minutes for retrieve your deleted data.
