5 Tips to Prevent Water Damage from Frozen Pipes

Winter has officially arrived, bringing a variety of concerns for homeowners, including water Damage from frozen pipes. Water damage resulting from burst pipes is one of the biggest risks of property damage during the winter months. The chance of your pipes freezing in your home skyrockets as temperatures drop. Water expands as it freezes, putting tremendous pressure on the pipes containing it, which can eventually cause the pipes to burst.

Lower temperatures always call for extreme caution when it comes to your home. Here are a few tricks to prevent burst pipes now and prevent the need for water damage restoration later:

1. Make sure your garage door is closed, especially if you know water supply lines are located inside.

2. Open cabinet doors underneath sinks and other plumbing locations to allow warm air to circulate through and around the pipes.

3. Let your faucet drip cold water. The trickle will allow for continuous movement, which relieves pressure on the pipes.

4. Set your thermostat to no lower than 55 degrees when you leave your home.

5. Keep your heat set at a constant temperature while you're at home and refrain from lowering it at night.
