Moving can be a stressful time in your life, you need to be very organised. We have put together a checklist with a timeline, so you know exactly what you need to do and when! Please feel free to contact us if you would like us to send this to you in a PDF printable version.
4 weeks before moving day
- Formally notify landlord/real estate if applicable
- Notify Medicare, Post Office, Superannuation, Tax Office and Transport Department of change in address
- Notify banks, clubs, dentist, doctor, finance and insurance institutions, library, schools, solicitors & subscriptions of change in address
- Create an inventory list for packing
- Organize for any unused furniture or personal items to be dropped off at your local Lifeline or Salvation Army store.
- Arrange for packing materials (see Your Local Movers Packing Materials online)
3 weeks before moving day
- Book mover
- Arrange for a carpet cleaner
- Arrange for a house cleaner
- Start packing least used items
- Establish cut-off dates for electricity, gas, phone, internet etc
- Arrange electricity, gas, phone, internet, pay TV to the new address
2 weeks before moving day
- Empty gas cylinders/bottles and drain fluid from the lawn mower & whipper-snipper
- Arrange finance for the moving day
- Arrange for parking access at the new address if applicable
- Return borrowed library books and/or DVDs
1 week before moving day
- Make arrangements for any perishable foods and half eaten packets (move out party etc)
- Make a list of what you will need on moving day ie pen, paper, phone charger, first-aid kit, keys, clean clothing, money, toilet paper, hand wash, hand towel, kettle, tea, coffee, drinks, nibbles etc
- Start putting your list of things needed on moving day into a box labeled ‘Moving Day Emergency Box’
- Good opportunity to do final loads of laundry
- Freeze all ice packs for the day of your move
- Make a rough diagram on where you would like all of your bigger items positioned in your new house
Day before moving day
- Defrost fridge/freezer (good idea to wipe down with vanilla)
- Remove batteries from battery powered devices
- Dismantle any unused furniture
- Disconnect the washing machine, microwave and any other white goods
- Unplug any electrical items such as TV’s, DVD Players, Blue Ray Players, Game Consoles and Stereos and place cables in bags with clear labels
- Place boxes in an area close to the access point but not in the way
- Ensure access walkways are safe (clear debris, overhanging branches etc.)
Moving Day
- Keep aside your ‘Moving Day Emergency Box’
- Read electricity, gas and water meters
- Tighten all taps in the property including taps in the garage and basement
- Walk around the house and garden and make sure you have everything ready to go
- Double check cupboards and behind doors
- Shut windows and lock doors
At the new house
- Check locks and smoke alarms as soon as possible
- Ensure gardens are child and pet safe
- Register to vote in your new electorate
- Direct traffic: stand at the rear of the truck and guide your movers as to where they need to go.
- Ensure access walkways are safe (clear debris, overhanging branches etc)
