Wastewater treatment or sanitation is a process used to convert the polluted water into water that can be safely discharged into the environment. During this process, pollutants are removed or broken down. The treatment of waste involves treatment of various particles just like human waste, solid waste, sewage and sludge.
PROCESSES INVOLVED IN WASTEWATER TREATMENT
Phase separation: In this process, it removes the solid particles from the pollutants. A process like ion exchange and reverse osmosis distillation are used to separate the microparticles which are non-dissolvable. This process is very lengthy and can take days before the process can proceed to the next step
Oxidation: Oxidation reduces the BOD (Biological oxygen demand) of the wastewater. It converts the impurities to carbon dioxide and some harmless biosolid.
Sewage plant treatment:This is a large process where the local municipality sets up a two-step primary process to remove solid wastes from the water and then to chemically treat the organic material as well as the nitrogen phosphorus and sometimes pathogenic bacteria also.
Wastewater treatment in industries
Disposal of the waste waters from industries is a huge and costly problem. Large-scale industries like petrochemical industries have treatment plant at their facility, in co-operation with the local government without causing any harm to the community. Various industrial wastewater treatment systems are listed below.
Petrochemical treatment:Anaerobic process is used to degrade complex organic pollutants from the water. Large surface area for the UV and RO treatment of the water is done to reduce the ammonia- nitrogen content in the water.
Textile Effluents: In the textile industry wastewater is a major concern. Water is used for cleaning the raw material and for flushing the product during production. The main ingredients of the wastewater are fat, oil, colour and other chemicals. The treatment process is not same in all factories. Pharmaceutical Waste-water Treatment: A wide range of products are made in pharmaceutical industries, with which a large number of chemical materials are being used throughout the process.
