Lead up Leaders!

Below are some questions to encourage Leadership of teams and leadership in teams. I look forward to discussing your ideas on the topic and gave some of my ideas on the questions to get it started!

What is a challenge teams face and how can a leader help them navigate through it?

Teams often face challenge, many different challenges. There are many unique perspectives coming together to tackle a problem and come up with a innovative solution. Teams face challenge in having enough cohesion to work together but not too much where effective conflict will not occur. You want your team to work together but not where a groupthink attitude enters and no ones pushes for creative problem-solving. At times it can be helpful to change the teams dynamics and provide frequent feedback to gauge the team cohesiveness. As leaders we need to setup a place that all members feel safe to voice their ideas.  This stems from the climate the leader sets for the team and how he/she guides it by setting up psychological safety. This can be a difficult task for a leader as the climate is all based on trust. This is the biggest challenge is building trust with the leader and the team.

Do you think diversity in teams is beneficial, if not, why?
Diversity is using all our uniqueness to learn and develop more open minded ideas and points of view. Yes diversity is necessary and can lead to a variety of new ideas to accomplish goals for a team. By being open and accepting other people’s ideas that differ from you can be an effective and creative way to develop teams and business. I believe diversity is the key to a teams success.

How should leadership be set up in a team?

That can depend on the teams’ dynamics. Most often there will be a leader heading a team which works great when the leader is aware. If a leader has awareness of their team and can switch to leadership styles to guide them to their full potential they can be effective in power and influence. Although depending on the team and project it is possible for shared leadership to reside. If all members take an equal based role and accept the same responsibilities and accountability then a team can share leadership and still be successful. I do believe though with share leadership their still needs to an authority (leader) to go to is conflict becomes too great to handle.

Tell us what you think on these topics.

What is challenge you faced with a team? How do you feel diversity contributes to teams? How does power effect teams?
