                       MAUDLIN LAMENTATION
A maudlin lamentation cackle
Staccato furtive whispering rumble
Ember of incarnadine symbol of ineptitude rankle
A resonant disdain of our otiose boredom tumble

Paling confusion writhing like a withered wrinkle
Harried look of sobriety and mistrust assemble
And hypnotic sags dangle on a sickle
In vacuous indolence we amble

Candid candor augmented in dappled fickle, twinkle
And abysmally, in withering precision we grumble
Vaulted dogma in ecclesiastical aplomb tickle
As hedonistic minions from hell dribble

Puckered lips splattered with foamy dew wheedle
And seesawed sanctimonious fillip stumble
Beetling old hauteur resuscitate in twinkling trickle
As the gargantuan pudgy figure of the pious-man wobble

AUTHOR’S NOTE
This is definitely a Christian poem, are you surprised? Well don’t be, it is anyway in a way, because it is not preaching any sermon or ecclesiastical dogma. It is simply talking about some ecclesiastic, pastor, priest, or a minister of God caught in the act. What act you may ask me? Well the acts some ecclesiastic, pastors, priests, and ministers of God are always caught- sin.
There is always one big mistake most people make, which is exactly what this poem is doing, which is the misconception that pastors, priests, and ministers of God are incapable of committing sins ordinary folks are prone to commit. There is also another misconception we all make, and that is the act of deifying pastors, priests and ministers of God. The simple truth is that pastors, priests and ministers of God are all ordinary folks dressed in ecclesiastic garb. Even the pastors that raised people from death. The point here is that these pastors are just vessels that God is using to carry on His good work on earth, and that does not make them more human than anyone of us. The fact is that they are as fallible as the rest of us.
Now don’t get me wrong, am not trying to make an excuse for pastors, priests and ministers of God, no am definitely not. I do firmly believe that it is important and imperative for Men of God to be held in a higher moral value than the ordinary folk. Certain higher moral standard should be expected from them, but then, the Bible admonishes us not to judge anybody. So you are free to expect a high moral standard from your pastor, priest, or minister of God, but when they are caught in the act, you have no right to judge them. It is strictly between them and the God they serve.
Now talking about higher moral standards, it is not only pastors, priests and ministers of God that we should expect this from. Every Christian is also bound to live in such lofty heights. But today, there is so much duplicity and insincerity going on in Christian world. Is like everyone you see in church today is basically there because of what he or she can get from God, and primarily not for the salvation of their souls. Am not going to talk about materialism and selfishness here you can read about that in my ‘Author’s Note’ at this link -

But I want to dwell briefly here on duplicity and insincerity among Christians and not just pastors, priests, and ministers of God, who were caught in the act. And like I always do, am going to make Nigeria my focal point. Christianity has become a cliché, something of a fad, without much substance underneath. Nigeria is a country made up almost on equal proportion of zealous Christians and fanatical Muslims, yet the country is embroiled in deep rooted corruption that tend to turn deaf ears on that simple Christian and Islamic injunction ‘Thou shall not steal’. It even goes to the ridiculous extent of churches and mosques being built with stolen money. Not to mention the romance between men of God and these thieves. Recently some bank directors appropriated depositor’s funds, did all sorts of manipulation at the stock exchange, and did what they liked with shareholder’s fund. It was disheartening to find out that majority of these directors were pastors and assistant pastors. That is how far the rot has gone; now I have not mentioned corrupt politicians, who now resort to prayers from men of God in order to win election. There is nothing wrong with that, but once these people are elected they forget the simple injunction God gave them ‘Thou shall not steal’. Which boils down to what I said earlier that it seems everyone you find in church these days is primarily there because of what he or she wants to get from God. Including thieves and other criminals.
Now on the poem, ‘MAUDLIN LAMENTATION’, I could have titled this poem, ‘AN EMOTIONAL LAMENTATION’. And what is it that am lamenting? It’s quite simply, the duplicity and increasing moral decadence among the clergy in our churches. Take note that the use of words that depicts loud laughter, and mocking laughter was meant to bring out the point that even though the issue is laughable, yet it is a serious matter. And definitely, the wobbling gargantuan pudgy figure of the pious-man, is that of a clergy who has gorged himself fat by dipping his hands in the church’s coffers, shaking eventually when he was caught.
