                          IMAGES
Sure nakedness that splits a mind open
Bare the images
Twisted and crumpled
Don’t we cringe back?

Images of darkness
That taunts
The traveler in darkness
A somber march
Down the labyrinth
It is the images of a fogged world
Springing up
That we might be drenched
In perspiration and palpitation

A petulant wind that blows across
Don’t we all crave for perspicacity?
That we will not be carried along
Much gassing
Much gibberish
And we deflate like a balloon
Don’t we tumble down in flailing flakes?

Images that taunts us
And tore sanity out of us.

AUTHOR’S NOTE
This is just an ordinary poem of what we witness on our streets today, the images of our world, and what pictures do they paint to you? Now this poem is not particularly about Africa, am talking of the whole world right now. Let me ask you a question right now, are you drenched in perspiration and palpitation each time you take a walk at some parts of your town?
Have you ever wondered what is wrong with the human mind? I mean the one that looks perfectly normal always turns out to be the craziest of the lot. Have you ever asked yourself why there is so much violence on earth; is it part of our humanity? Now I am not talking about the murders and violence on our streets each day, which leaves you palpitating and perspiring while taking a walk at some part of your town. No am talking about violence on the large scale which has killed millions and millions of people on earth. Now that’s what am talking about. Human history cannot be complete without a recount of the wars we have fought. Maybe that’s the reason many people look forward to Heaven, a place where they won’t witness so much violence and cruelty.
Now have you ever asked yourself the need for nuclear weapons on earth? What was on the mind of the people that concocted this gigantic monstrosity? Which have left us with the biggest palpitation and perspiration of all, the fear of an outbreak of nuclear war? The people that invented nuclear weapons were certified as sane and are held in high esteem in certain parts of our world.
I have heard some lame excuses why nuclear weapons are necessary, some people have even argued that nuclear weapons will never be used, well that is really comforting and it will save us much palpitation and perspiration. But the pertinent question to ask here is, millions are dying of hunger each day while we are busy spending trillions of dollars to amass weapons of mass destruction that we are not ever going to use. Now what is wrong with the human mind? At least the guys in charge of amassing these weapons of mass destruction for each nation that has it has been certified as sane and normal people. Even nations that can barely feed her people are scrambling to get their hands on weapons of mass destruction. To do what? Kill fellow human beings on a large scale. Now please do tell me, what is basically wrong with the human mind?
I cannot talk about violence without talking about Africa, violence and Africa seems to go hand in hand. These days no part of the continent is immune to violence, with the recent Arab spring in North Africa. But am not going to talk about Arab spring, what happened in those countries are part of nation building process, and theirs just happen to come when it came, but it was inevitable that it would come. I guess other African countries trying to stifle democracy must have taken a cue from the Arab spring especially the inglorious death of Colonel Gaddafi.
Enough of Arab spring that is not the type of violence I want to talk about here. Like before, my focal point will be on Nigeria, and I will like to talk about a new form of violence. Terrorism; Nigerians just woke up one morning to be confronted by a type of violence they use to hear about in foreign news, terrorism. We all thought that suicide bombing is alien to Africans and that no self-respecting black man or woman would want to blow himself or herself up with a pack of explosives in order to kill fellow black people. We all know our faults but being suicidal is not one of them. I believe that we have the lowest rate of suicide in African, despite all the hard times we have been through. We are well known for ethnic cleansing, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo, Liberia etc, readily comes to mind. But we are not known for killing fellow tribe’s people. But that is exactly what is happening right now in most northern parts of Nigeria. It is strange and it is alien to us. But it has become a reality we have to live with right now. And that reality comes with a group that calls itself ‘Boko Haram’. A group many have claimed has a link with the ‘Al Queda’, a worldwide terror group whose leader was recently killed by American marines.
I know going down the history lane that each act of violence perpetuated by man had a cause, but up to this very moment that I am writing this note, I cannot put my finger on what ‘Boko Haram’ is fighting for. One moment they are planting and detonating bombs at churches, the next moment they are launching fierce suicide bomb attack on police establishments. And when you are putting down your finger on police and churches, they are launching suicide bomb at media establishments. Then you will say that maybe some media guy wrote an article about them they do not like. But what about defenseless people at a market square they targeted, or the people at a bar drowning their sorrows with alcohol. Then you might think they have a thing or two against drinking alcohol, maybe it is a religious thing. But their next target will baffle you out of your socks, a traditional ruler in their tribe while saying some prayers at the mosque.
It is all a senseless ogre of violence and brutal killings of fellow tribe’s men and women, even children, which leave one flagerbasted at the wanton destruction of lives and properties. It is an image of our world I would not want to go to bed with at night. I wrote a novel about terrorism and hostage taking, which is not published yet, but the first two chapters of the novel has been published at – http://www.okeyeni.com. Check out these links for a sneak preview of the novel. It is titled ‘EMMA THE CHILD PROSTITUTE’. It is a work of fiction, but regardless of that, it is a worthwhile reading, as it is packed full of terrorism, terrorists and the motives behind their terror acts. Once more check out the links at -

I believe I have said enough about terrorism, violence and what is wrong with the human mind, at least for now. Consequently let me round up this note by once more urging you to go and purchase the collection of poems featuring this poem, IMAGES and many other poems in e-book format at amazon.com. The title of this collection once more is ‘NOSTALGIA, A COLLECTION OF POEMS’.
