Give me freedom or give me death

What are the driving motivators for the Boondis Insurgency? How do they feel about the matters of Shivasii slavery? Are they just trying to exchange the Overlordship of Zayn for their own?

Those are some heavy questions, aren't they? And some of them don't entirely make any sense to new readers I bet. For my older readers, who recognise the Shivasii, yes, they are changing. How they are changing will be discussed soon enough. For my newer readers, suffice it to say the Shivasii are a sort of Dragonkin, albeit dimwitted and in no way magically inclined, unlike most other Dragonkin out there in the fictional universes of other authors.

In regards to the Shivasii slavery, I decided to make the "Good Guys" a little evil. The idea of enslaving men - humans - is anathema to them. Men are free beings, with the rights of self determination, freedoms et cetera et cetera and all of that good ol' fashion Enlightenment thinking (with, naturally, the Long twist). Boondis doesn't necessarily see such freedoms as inalienable or God given, but earned. Hence the very nature of the insurgency itself.
The Shivasii, being non-sapient, so obviously reptilian, translates to a sense of inferiority in the human zeitgeist. Shivasii are simply less alive then men. Its a nasty way to approach things, but it makes sense for the society and its parallels in Earth History.

Of course, with those parallels come others. The forward thinkers who do see the Shivasii as equal - while different - beings deserving freedoms and self-determination. I've yet to decide where my main characters are on the spectrum of Shivasii rights. But basically, the Boondis Insurgency generally doesn't care about the Shivasii's plight.

The Boondis do not seek to overthrow Zayn and his Unified Talaesian Kingdom and make themselves the new Overlords of the world. The core element of Boondis is the self-determination of a peoples. They are simply fighting to allow their corner of the world to rule itself, with its own goals. A reasonable desire. This has been the Boondis goal for many years; historically Boondis has fallen under the banner of their islandic neighbours to the south, Coventry. This ended in a new nation, Coventry Boondis, one where the Boondis had great say, and they seek a return to those times, even if their Coventry cousins don't want it.

How are the Boondis organised? Are they a military organisation or a government in exile? Or both?

The Insurgency has a minimalist organisational method. Most "Officers" wear multiple hats, running multiple unit sizes along with serving in political seats. The Ruling Congress of the Insurgency - usually just called the Congress - represents the most charismatic and intelligent members of the Insurgency. They meet secretly every few months, and when not in Congress, are almost always in the field. These men and women seek out allies, supplies, and continue - usually openly - to espouse the rights of self-determination.

While the Insurgency uses a military rank system - specifically an Army system - they do not technically use the same field organisation. Battalions, Division, Brigades, Regiments, Platoons, squads, et cetera all exist, and you can ask most any Boondis member their place in the roster. However, a member of Squad 3 Regiment 2, might never see a member of Squad 1 Regiment 2, as they do not travel in files or Armies.

They are, for all intents and purposes, a guerilla organisation who could not win a full scale battle if they tried and so resort to minor skirmishes and sabotage. Yes, one might call them Terrorists, but the odd thing with terrorism is not both sides see it that way. Even if they are Terrorists, they have ensured never to intentionally attack civilians, and have maintained a record of zero collateral damage.

Later today I might post something else, specifically about Zayn the Beautiful, as I feel yesterday I didn't track him as well as I could.
