With the new Han Solo movie coming out, I decided to give the new Han Solo novel, Last Shot, a read. Here is my review and thoughts on the novel. I won’t unveil too much of the plot, but there may be some minor spoilers ahead.

The story begins two years after the events of the Last Jedi, and introduces Han and Leia who are now living peacefully on Chandrila with their two year old son, Ben Solo. Leia is busy with her new role in the New Republic, and Han is now a struggling parent, full of self doubt, trying to adjust to family life after the war.

His everyday life is interrupted by Lando who’s been attacked in Cloud City by a man named Fyzen Gor, who both Lando and Han encountered in separate events years earlier. Fyzen Gor is in search of a mysterious device, the phylanx, which he demands Lando find with three days, or Gor will annihilate cloud city.

Han and Lando, along with Lando’s girlfriend, a young pilot Taka, the Angry Ewok Slicer Peepka, and Chewbacca then go out on a mission to retrieve the Phylax and take down Gor.

The story switching from the present to the past, which looked pretty tenuous when I read the chapter index, but actually it wasn’t so bad. There are different narratives that start in different places and then slowly wind together as the story progresses. Unveiling more about the villain and his backstory piece by piece.

The writing style was straight forward, easy to understand, was humorous with plenty of jokes. One of the highlights of this story was definitely the bander between Han Solo and Lando. There were also many puns hidden within the story which you’d get if you’ve seen the Star Wars movies.  I especially liked this one.

It’s also fast paced, with plenty of action and fight scenes for people who enjoy that sort of thing.

There were a lot of characters which could be difficult to keep up with at times, but I found the characters pretty believable and was easily immersed into the story. A lot of Star Wars books are pretty serious, so I liked how this one was more light-hearted. Han and Lando share more of the action, but there are also appearances from Leia, baby Ben Solo, Maz, and Chewbacca.

There are plenty of original characters who I came to like. Highlights include,  Avo the gungan who does not say meesa, and berates anyone for assuming that all gungans do. Like this great scene here, which would be loved by anyone who doesn't like Jar Jar Binks.


I also love Peekpa, the angry Ewok slicer who only speaks Ewokese, probably very rudely, according to Han, who has no idea what she’s saying.

The villain Gor is also interesting with his skewed way of thinking about droids and his crazy goals.

You will need to have same basic knowledge on Star Wars to enjoy this book. I recommend watching at least Star Wars episodes 4, 5, 6, before reading it. There are also many alien species which names kind of eluded me,  but some quick investigation on the net can probably help you out.

Overall I enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected and would be willing to read it again. I actually enjoyed it a lot more that other Star Wars novels that I’ve read recently. I’m not a fan of either Han of Lando, but I ended up liking them a lot in this novel. I recommend this book for any fans of Stars Wars or Han Solo.
