BOOK REVIEW #82 - GIRL MANS UP

BLURB:

All Pen wants is to be the kind of girl she’s always been. So why does everyone have a problem with it? They think the way she looks and acts means she’s trying to be a boy—that she should quit trying to be something she’s not. If she dresses like a girl, and does what her folks want, it will show respect. If she takes orders and does what her friend Colby wants, it will show her loyalty. But respect and loyalty, Pen discovers, are empty words. Old-world parents, disintegrating friendships, and strong feelings for other girls drive Pen to see the truth--that in order to be who she truly wants to be, she’ll have to man up.

MY THOUGHTS:

When it comes to manning up, it's not only Pen needs it. Everyone has to man up in one way or another. Whenever I read books like this, I don't understand why people just don't accept for who they really are. With their pointy-judgy eyes, they're screwing someone's life. They're hurting, causing an uncomfortable situation. Like, why people aren't putting themselves in their shoes. When I see them, I want nothing than wringing their necks. It's not them playing, trying to pretend or screwing, it's YOU who are screwing when you talk shit about them.

Well, let's move to the matter in the hands. Penelope, Pen like she wants to be. Putting on his brother's clothes and Kicking Asses when it comes to video games, having "Old-world" parents, having a crush on a girl, causing confusion whether she was a girl or not and helping an asshole friend for his rendezvous with girls. She definitely was living a tiring high-school life.

“The thing is, I’m not a boy, but I don’t want to be that girl either. I just want everyone to screw off and let me do my own thing for once.”

Everything in this book screams "Another shit-hole where every shitty thing is happening." Girls getting knocked up, guys on drugs, rude guys making crude comments, a little time when classes had happened and a well-known project. Seeing this type of high school life, mine was like a grade level. (Glad, though)
No matter how much fucked up the situation was, there is a chance of getting a cute dorky couple to adore. When both girls are kicking asses on the video game, I don't know why I feel this, it seems so nerdy and dreamy. This is how it feels when I talk about books with my partner? I wouldn't know unless I get the chance. (Sad though, I don't have time for others when I was constantly gushing over my book boyfriends. *sigh* )

You know what? This book made me to long for an elder brother to take care of me(Not that I want to be saved, but still someone who stands with me). Johnny, Pen's brother/protector/family. He will be there when she didn't even ask. He knows what to say. He knows how to love, respect and support her. And sure he will reprimand when it was needed. God, I love him so much. And sure as hell, he became my brother.

Overall, a teensy read with an LGBT theme. If not for the story, then at least try for the theme.

MY RATING: Dreadful
