London Calling: A Miserable Day

Yesterday was a miserable day, a Les Miserable day. Going to see this long running show had long been an ambition that’s now finally fulfilled. And what a show it is. The setting, the Queen’s Theatre Shafetesbury Avenue, just off Leicester Square, was superb. The cast were magnificent and the sets were spectacular. These are words I don’t use lightly, it was such a fabulous experience that unless you have seen this show in all its glory, you will have no idea what I’m writing about.

We saw the afternoon show and entered the theatre at two in the afternoon. I’ve never been to a West End show so cannot compare this theartre to any others, but initially the place looked very intimate. We were in row J of the Dress Circle, right in the middle and had a great view of the stage. As the place began to fill I heard a muffled cry and thud to my left and a woman had fallen down the stairs. Drama from the outset! So I did my gentlemanly thing and ran to her aid. She was fine. Carrying too much paraphernalia, negotiating steep stairs and excitedly trying to read her program meant a tumble was inevitable. She was fine, she insisted once more, as I helped her up. Luckily, she was more embarrassed than anything.

Drama over we all settled down and the lights dimmed. The show was about to begin.

We left the theatre like a couple of excited kids, chatting about how good one song was, how great the set pieces were, what brilliant singing and acting. All round fantastic entertainment. We spent the next hour or more having a great meal and fine bottle of Chardonnay in Leicester Square and chatting about the superb show we had just seen.

What a Miserables day we had.
