I travel to Scotland a lot looking for stories, and to help breathe authentic life into my books. I have recently returned from one such trip. This time I went to Caithness an area I haven’t been before, and I wanted to share some a wee bit of it with you.

On the drive from Edinburgh to Caithness (the northeastern most area on mainland Britain), I first stopped at Dunrobin Castle, the seat of Sutherland. The Earldom of Sutherland is one of seven ancient earldoms of Scotland. Dunrobin is a fascinating castle on the sea built over the ceuturies around a 13th century keep. The original keep is encased by a series of additions that were constructed from the 17th century onwards. The conical spires were added in the 1840s and give the castle a look of a French chateau.

After arriving in Thruso where I stayed, I took a twenty minute country drive to the small village of Mey where the Queen Mother found her holiday retreat at Castle Mey. I was surprised to find this castle homey and casual, but could definitely understand why the Queen Mother loved it so much. It was just down right cozy. This castle has an extensive garden and greenhouse that not only provides vegetables, berries and fruit, but also flowers that bloom almost year-round, to adorn the rooms and dining tables with freshly cut flowers whenever a royal is in attendance. Prince Charles has now taken to spending a fortnight at Castle Mey every summer. I’m sure he has fond memories of his grandmother there.

I spent an entire day hiking around the point of John O’Groats to find the Stacks of Dunscaby and all the fantastic birdlife in the area. The beaches were sandy to rocky and the water of the North Sea clean and clear. I was blessed with beautiful sunshine, hiking among the sheep and watching a plethora of birds.

I hope you love Scotland as much as I do! The Highland Commander releases on June 27th and is available in mass market paperback as well as e-book.
