Reading Shakespeare: Much Ado About Nothing

Continuing our journey through the works of the great British playwright, our next stop is a comedy that will actually make you Laugh. Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing will help explain to aliens the concept of human lying, if ever they wanted to explore our species, this play will help. Shakespeare turns everything on itself and tries, through out the idea of love and marriage, to show how people can lie in the name of love. Although the play explores both sides of lying, it gives readers the proper tools to differentiate between these sides. Both the positive and the negative, the play explains that a positive lie is one that will lead to two falling in love with each other and the other kind, the negative one, will lead to two falling out.

Shakespeare handles this issue wonderfully as the audience will understand both sides of lying. This explanation that he provides is found in the different relationships that the play establishes. One could go so far as saying that Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing kick started all modern romantic stories, as one will find many elements of modern romantic storytelling in this play.

A wonderful story that will make you laugh. One of Shakespeare’s best works.
