7 Tips To Get You Kids Hooked To Reading This Summer!

Tags: book library

Summer is here and the kids have done it all, swimming, picnics, playing outside, sleepovers, camping and now they’re home and they’re bored! What better time to introduce them to the world of books and the wonders of reading? Here are a few tips to get them hooked and you’ll hear them complain no more:

  1. Visit the library.

You don’t need to be rich to own a lot of books. Simply take your child to the library. Attend story times at the library. Ask the librarian for suggestions for both yourself and your child. Check out books for yourself. You are the best advertisement for your child to get interested in reading books.

  1. Attend a book reading.

Always keep a lookout for book reading announcements at your local library or book stores. Take your child with you and introduce them to new authors and genres. Hearing a book read out loud is one of the best ways to pike up their interest.

  1. Pay attention to your child’s interests.

If your child is interested in animals, buy them a book about animals or find animal books at the library. Read fact and fiction alike so as to maintain a balance. If they question you about something they read, go through the book together to search for the answer.

  1. Set aside time to read together.

In the initial stages, it easier for children to pick up on reading if they have company. Set aside some amount of time every day and devote it to reading together and talk about what you’ve read afterwards. Try to read books that the child picks out, it will make them feel more involved in the reading process.

  1. Point out interesting words.

Whenever you see an interesting word, even if it’s on the sign board outside a store, point it out to your child. Ask them if they know the meaning and encourage the use of a dictionary if they don’t know.

  1. Become a fan.

As your child starts reading, they will develop a liking for favourite authors. Encourage this fan-ship by helping them write or email to their favourite authors.

  1. Don’t limit the child to books.

Encourage your child to read the newspaper and discuss the daily news with them regularly. Read the comic strips and the jokes. Allow them to read comics as well or random sign boards while walking down the road. Do not limit the books you allow them to read as fiction or non-fiction. Let the child have a taste of and for everything.

Reading can make books their new best friends if the approach is right and you won’t have to worry about the children spending too much time in the wrong place. Make this summer into a journey of fantasy and revelation for your kids as you bring them into a new world with reading. Head to you nearest JustBooks Store today or you can order here too!
