Whilst on our joint birthday travels around Dublin my girlfriend took me for a late lunch down at the white Moose Cafe. She told me that it had become quite famous in Dublin recently. However she left the allure as to why a secret which kept my opinions impartial.I must admit that with the popularity of the place, I was expecting obnoxious staff and high prices. But, I was gladly mistaken.

On arrival I had to take a second glance at the signage around the hotel and cafe. The sandwich board stating “Over 70s orgy this way” momentarily confused me.

It soon became apparent that the cafe had its own brand of quirky humour. With a kind of anti-establishment tone in regards to ‘the customer is always right’ culture of the catering industry. Though on the face of it this may not be a great move, it certainly works. I and other customers laughed, and inwardly cheered at sign posts such as ‘no assholes’ (allowed).

In the ever present PC society, and consumer driven ethic of catering, too many companies lose their individuality, and bow to the rude requests of trouble customers. Most of us have experience biting our tongues to not respond negatively to nasty, unreasonable customers to avoid getting the sack. It seems most customers can relate to that situation, and back their decision to expel unruly diners. The small quaint restaurant seemingly preaches an attitude of mutual respect that we can all get behind. You treat me fair, I treat you fair.

Now on to the lunch itself. Initially there was a bit of confusion, admittedly due to Rebecca and I dropping by without a reservation – there were no tables left. However, within the restaurant, customer service is still very much alive as the busy waiter made every effort to find us a Table. He allowed us to eat outside on the picnic benches which seemed like a lovely idea at first.

The sun was splitting the trees and a warm breeze was blowing, making the prospect of a nice outdoor meal exceptional. But we did not count for the bipolar nature of the Irish weather. I could not decide whether to take my jacket off or keep it on, it was up and down like a yoyo with the change of temperature. This was manageable until it started to rain. Luckily another waiting couple and we, decided to share a table to each get out of the rain. This was of course a little bit awkward, but I was glad to be out of the elements, and the other couple were given a fresh table shortly after.

The food menu reflected the cafe itself, warm, simple and fun. One niggle I had in my trip to Dublin was that everything seemed incredibly expensive. So much so that I could not work out what was fair, and what was not. However subjectively, especially considering the portion sizes to come, I felt it was excellent value for money.

Although the all-day breakfast pancakes looked divine, I instead opted for the new gourmet Cajun chicken burger at only 11 Euro’s. The size and food quality of the burger was immense. I especially liked the melted cheddar cheese, and how it merged with the Cajun sauce so beautifully to sting the senses. I even remarked to my girlfriend that it was the best burger I had ever tasted. Rebecca had a gourmet sambo which was so big she struggled to bite it. I was happily informed that this was as delicious as it looked.

Overall I was very impressed with the café, and for the price tag, a holidayer would be hard pressed to find better quality. I would give the cafe a 4 out of 5 or a more accurate score of 9 out of 10.
