Guest Post: The Typical Writing Day, By Michael Okon // Part of his new book tour!

Today, I’m super excited to introduce Michael Okon, guest writer on the blog, and author of Monsterland. In honor of his new book, Monsterland Reanimated, which came out earlier this year, he decided to run a book tour, and I’m one of the lucky bloggers that gets to have Michael hosted here. So without further ado, I’ll hand over the mic:

My Typical Writing Day

By Michael Okon

I’ve been Writing books for a while now. I have to admit that at first I wasn’t nearly as disciplined as I should have been. But it didn’t take me long to realize that if I wanted to take this writing business seriously, and treat as an actual business, I had to lay down some rules for myself.

There’s no place for procrastinating when it comes to being an author. No one is going to get things done for you so you need to buckle down and get to it. I’ve found that following a daily schedule keeps me on track. After all, if I had a typical nine-to-five job I’d have to follow a schedule – one that wou

ld be dictated by someone else. Finding what works for me and sticking to it has been the key to keeping my fingers flying over the keyboard.

While I do need to remain flexible for those times when something out of the ordinary comes up – I have kids and you just never know. While you need to find what works best for you and your situation, here’s what my writing looks like:

Research and Development 9am to 4pm.

This might seem like a long amount of time to

research and develop future and current writing ideas, I find you can never block out too much prep time. It’s not like I stay glued to the computer the entire time. For me, research can be anything from visit actual locations, local libraries, bookstores – even malls and museums are fair game for my book writing research.

Cook dinner and play with the kids until 8pm

My kids are a super important part of my life and I love spending time with them. I love to cook and preparing nutritious meals for th

e kiddos is an important part of that. Overseeing homework, discussing the school day and catching a TV show or two before bedtime is all part of our nightly family routine.

Tuck in kids, then wife.

My kids are still young enough to appreciate having Dad read to them or vise versa. Then it’s time to spend some quality time with

my wife (no need to go into detail here) and I’m on to the next phase of my writer’s life…

Write until my eyes go until about midnight every night.

I enjoy writing at night, when it’s quiet and I can put all of that research and development ideas into play. Basically, I write until I can no longer keep my eyes open. Then it’s lights out and I do it all over again!

Michael Okon is a bestselling author and screenwriter. Monsterland Reanimated, Book Two in the Monsterland series, was just released on April 13, 2018 and promises to be bigger and badder than Book One. Michael invites readers to connect with him on his website
