When to start revising for mock exams

The transition from year 11 to year 12 is a very tricky and stressful one. You are suddenly expected to make higher quality homework and lots more of it (all usually inconveniently due on the same day like teachers have secret evil meetings) and it takes some time getting used to, and no-one expects you to do it overnight! In fact, it probably took me till the June after I started to really get into the swing of it- but this isn't a set time for everyone. The most important thing is to take a deep breath and think about time management.

In relation to Mock Exams (normally November or January), it may seem like a really long way away and that it is future you's problem for in a couple of months time. WARNING: not a good idea!!!! I had a lovely Christmas break last year and left two weeks to create Revision resources and revise. Baaaaaaad idea, most stressful two weeks of my life up till then. It may seem like you are completely swamped now, but unfortunately its going to get worse (top points for my motivational speaking). On the other hand, I am not saying that you have loads of time to spend hours doing revision each week because this is not the case either.

My advice is to revise little and often, if you just allocate 10 minutes a day to creating revision resources for each subject (you don't even need to look over them much at this point) it will make a HUGE difference, not just for your revision and memory, but also as a stress reliever later down the line and a comfort throughout the months coming up to mocks that you have done something, even if its not much.

An idea for this is maybe creating a poster once every few weeks for the topic you've just covered, or key idea/word flashcards, Free periods are great to do this, especially with a friend because you can take it in turns to explain what you've each learned so far in your subjects and by explaining it it sticks in your mind more. Look at my post about revision techniques for more ideas!

However, if this approach doesn't appeal to you then about 3 weeks before mocks, start doing intense cramming. This will be very time consuming and stressful but cramming does work better for some people.

For me personally, I like to make about half of my revision over the months before hand then cram and complete the rest starting a month before, then the day of or the day before the exam is focused fully on the next subject exam.

A good way to organise this and have a visual plan in your head is by using a bullet journal, which is the new bible for me and I will be doing a post on this soon.

The most important thing to take away from this post, however, is that mock exams are designed to be a learning experience and teaches each individual how to improve their revision plan (including times and techniques), you aren't going to get this right first time and its important to remember that this is only half of the information you will need to remember for the actual exam. Use this opportunity to discover what you are like as a learner and what works best for YOU, not your mates or your teachers opinion but you personally.

Good luck!
