SO YOU WANT TO BE A WRITER

• How to be a writer

As an aspiring Writer, freelancer or copywriter, there are a couple of things you need to know to turn dreams into reality. Writing isn’t just about getting a pen and paper, there are a couple of serious things involved.
Learn to love these three things:

READING-
While writing this article, I met a friend who told me that she enjoyed writing but hated reading. That’s just like saying you love swimming but hated the water, or a chef who hates food.
To a writer, there are two things that are most important to become better- write a lot and do a lot of reading. Most professional writing classes usually involve a lot of writing and reading with the aid of a professional to assist you in learning how to read critically and get better at self-editing. Try a lot of reading, even subjects outside your comfort zone.

While reading, try to understand the aspect of things you like, what works for you and the parts you hate. The great yet simple thing about reading a lot of that it makes you better at writing without even realizing it. I call it “learning by osmosis”. You see yourself start absorbing ideas, assimilating different stories, vocabulary and plots.
Read a lot, enjoy writing, and you would see your writing skills improve gradually.

DON’T NEGLECT YOUR JOB-
Every writers dream, is to write that best selling novel that gets them set for life. Some are even writing so as to quit their day job. Or are you in college thinking you could come out straight after graduation, become a novelist and never have to work for a job? I can tell you that for about 95 percent of writers, thats not gonna go happen. Sure a small percentage of you could get that “lucky break”, but I seriously doubt a majority would ever be able to sustain a lifestyle or run a household.

You have to understand that having a day job could do this for you- enable you aprroach you writing with passion and not have to worry about finances. It keeps you fed, clothed, a roof over your heads, take care of needed insurance and even some retirement fund.

It then begs the question, “How do I make time for writing with a full time job?” If you love writing, you’ll find the time and even gget better at time management. With time, you’ll definitely start making money from writing. But before you start making that serious dough, your day job is needed as it is the foundation that all your dreams lie on.

REJECTION-
Rejection a.k.a writers woe is one thing every writer would face in his/her career. The difference between a successful writer and one that’s not is how they deal with this. Writers get rejected, a lot. The best thing to do is to endure it and learn to love and seek rejection. Venturi said “Wallpaper your writing space with rejection letters”, finally those rejection letters would turn into acceptance letters.

Rejection is not all about an editor not accepting your work. Even after being published, you can’t fully avoid rejection. Reviewers could write discouraging one-star reviews. You know what you should do with those reviews? Love them. It makes you enjoy and appreciate the five-star reviews and tell you that you are doing something that stirs up deep reaction.

If people don’t talk about your work, whether positve or negative, that’s when you should get upset.
