Google play initially known as Android Market is a digital distribution service controlled and developed by Google. It is the official application store of the Android operating system. It allows users download and browse apps that developed with the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) and published by Google.

The Google Play Store was released on the 6th of March, 2012, making the Google ebook store, Android Market and Google Music one brand. This marked a shift in Google’s digital distribution strategy. Google Play Music, Google Play Books, Google Play Newsstand, Google Play Movies & TV and Google Play Games are services operating under the Google Play banner. Google has gradually enlarged the geographical support for each of the services following their re-branding.

The applications available on the Google Play may either have a charge rate or free of charge. This depends on individual apps. Apps can be deployed to a device from the Google Play Website or can be directly downloaded on an Android device through the Google Play Store.

Some apps exploit hardware capabilities of a device. Such apps are targeted to customers who use devices with distinct hardware properties, such as a front-facing camera (for online video calling). An example of other distinct hardware properties is a motion sensor (for motion-dependent games).

There are subjects of multiple issues pertaining to security, in which malicious software are uploaded and approved by the store. Also, users have unknowingly downloaded this software and have complained about varying degrees of severity. More than 82 billion apps have been downloaded in 2016, while more than 2.7 million apps have been published in 2017.

Before March 2015, a devices section was added for users to buy Google Nexus devices like Chromecasts, Chromebooks, accessories and other Google-branded hardware. On the 11th of March, 2015, a different online hardware retailer referred to as the Google Store started as a replacement for the Devices section of the Play Store application.

Play Store Games

The introduction of this service was at the Google I/O 2013 Developer Conference, while the standalone mobile application was released on the 24th of July, 2013. This online gaming service for Android users has public and social leaderboards, cloud saves, achievements and real-time multiplayer gaming abilities.

Google Play magazines and News publications

This is a digital newsstand and news aggregator providing subscriptions to topical news feeds and digital magazines. The basic Newsstand service, with topical news feeds, is now available worldwide, as of January 2017. The Newsstand content is available in more than 35 countries.

Google Play Store Books

This is an eBook digital distributive service. The Google Play Store application provides more than 5 million eBooks which users can purchase. Users can also upload up to a thousand eBooks of their own. However, the uploaded eBooks must be in form of EPUB or PDF file formats. Play Store books are available in 75 countries.

Play Store TV shows and Movies

This is a video on demand service providing television shows and movies accessible for rental or purchase. However, this depends on availability. In January 2017, TV shows became available only in Austria, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. While movies became available in more than 110 countries

Google Play Application Services

This is an Android application that updates the apps on an Android device. It updates the apps by checking if the installed apps have new available versions. With this services, you can use higher quality location-based services that require minimal energy, access the newer privacy settings authenticate Google services and you can synchronize your contacts.

How to download and install the Google Play Store

  • Go to your file manager and click on where the Play Store app’s apk is.
  • Open the apk, read the permission page and click “install”.

  6. Click on the proceed icon on the lower right side of the page.
  7. You can now use your Google Play Store.

How to use multiple Google Accounts on Google Play Store

  1. Open the Settings app on your device.
  2. Click Accounts.
  3. An ‘Add Accounts’ option will show up, click on it.
  4. Follow the given instructions to add your account
  5. If need be, repeat the steps several times to add up as many accounts as you want.

N:B: To avoid unauthorized access to your accounts, use password protection on your device.
