Devoted half the day to taking photos for my Chinese New Year in Singapore hub over at HubPages. Ventured down to Chinatown in the late afternoon and remained there till nine. By the time I reached home around eleven, my feet were killing me and my back sore from carrying my gear. Despite that, I didn’t go to bed till after two. I was invigorated, while at the same time feeling exhausted.
The reason for this was probably because Chinatown wasn’t as crowded as I feared it would be, and so it was very pleasant strolling through the Festive market. With the light-up being just last Saturday, the hordes have yet to strike in full. Not to imply there was entirely no crowd, though. Between seven and eight, most parts of the bazaar did require some patience to mosey through. Overall, I’m moderately satisfied with what I shot, and for the moment they are sufficient for my hub. I’d probably be returning two or three times to get shots from different angles, If possible, I’d like to take some videos of the stage performances too.
I could be mistaken about this. This year’s Chinese New Year light-up feels dimmer. The decorations and festive lights also appear sparser. An effort at energy conservation? Reduced funds due to the gloomy retail situation? Either way, it didn’t seem to affect the mood of the shoppers. Everybody was enthusiastic as ever.
Venturing On
Since I was already in town, with all my barang-barang as Singaporeans call it, I decided to continue wandering after I was done with Chinatown. With them being side-by-side, I quickly ended up at Clarke Quay. It’s been a while since I visited, and for the moment, it doesn’t feel as if the Chinese New Year mood has reached. Nonetheless, it was still quite enjoyable taking standard tourist shots. I was almost tempted into going into one of the pubs for a drink.
Temptation Strikes!
One bad thing arose from this evening. Since my last overseas trip nearly two years ago, I’ve pretty much neglected my camera. I’ve forgotten how enjoyable it is to just stroll aimlessly and shoot away. To be reacquainted with this joy quickly brings on the standard scourge for all hobbyists. I started to long for an updated camera. One of those snazzy new models with HD movie capabilities, built-in filters and five times the number of focus points as mine. For the moment, I’m able to keep this urge in check. How long would I be able to resist, though? Gosh … I’m surfing Nikon’s page as I write this post. Temptation does strike anywhere and anytime, doesn’t it? And once it bites, this doggie doesn’t let go. (It’s the Year of the Dog, next, next year)
