Learning On-Page SEO: learn SEO basics or refresh your memory!

Learning On-Page SEO

First of all, I want to do a brief introduction to  SEO basics as some of you might not know what I’m talking about.

Search Engine optimization is a highly crucial aspect that will make your business fail or succeed. On-page SEO is an essential foundation for your business for achieving high rankings in search engines. In today’s tech-savvy world, online sales contribute to as much as 65% of your total sales. You need to reach out your audience by anticipating their needs or being more precise with the keywords that they are likely to type to search for the product that you are selling.

Many companies rely heavily on SEO websites to get them in the top search engine ranks. A high SEO level improves your sale potential by about 75%. On-page SEO are all the things that you can do on your website to enhance rankings in search engines. The page titles, Meta tags, and product descriptions are the types of stuff that you can do on a page.

Learning on page SEO techniques will help you reach out to more customers. You can surely leave the task to experts, but it is always good to know the workings of your business and what things will affect it. So, Keep reading that I will show you some of the important ones.

On-Page SEO Techniques: Basics!

Follow these steps:

  • Do Keyword Research (You can read How I do it Step-by-Step here)
  • Put the keyword you want to rank for in the page title (Meta Title)
  • Put this same keyword in the page description (Meta Description)
  • Do your best to use this keyword in the URL (URL slug)
  • Make Keyword density less than 1%
  • Try putting this keyword in an H1 header and an image alt tag.
  • Shoot for a 1,500+ word post (Read my 20 blog writing tips here)

An excellent plugin I use for this is Yoast SEO. In my opinion, the best plugin ever as it helps you optimize an article with a simple checklist which includes all that I mentioned above. Another SEO plugin which is commonly used is All-in-One SEO. It’s also good, but it’s not of my preference.

Both are free, just head over to the “Add New” plugin section and search for one of them like this:

STEP 1:

STEP 2:

Now, let’s go in deep with the important aspects of on-page SEO:

Heading or Page Title (Meta Title)
Perhaps the most crucial of the SEO aspects is the page title. You can focus on a keyword that can feature on the page title. When potential consumers type in the keyword, your website will appear in the search engines based on how you have used the keyword in your page title. Look below to an example of a page title:

Meta Descriptions
Meta Descriptions are something that describes the product in short but has the necessary keywords. Meta Descriptions will again help to narrow down the searches so it is important that your meta tags have that particular keyword that will further help you get the desired traffic to your website. Meta description will be a short story of the product. This is vital for SEO.

To continue with the same example shown above, see below the meta decription and notice the keywords “Wedding Invitations” and “Wedding Cards” appearing in there:

URL Slug

This gives power to your article, and lets’s Google and other search engines give value to that particular post. See below example, where this site targets to “Wedding invitations”:

(Side note: you can check which are the main keywords your competitors are targeting by looking to the URL slug)

Keyword Density Less than 1%
Keyword density just means the amount of time that a particular keyword appears in your text. There is a thin line between having the desired keyword density and over doing it. Search engines are known to cut off websites that have too much keyword density as they consider it SPAM content. The keyword density you should be targeting is 1% or less. If you don’t know how to calculate this percentage, don’t worry, Yoast SEO plugin does this for you automatically.

Page load speed
Nowadays, search engines care a lot about user experience and page load speed is a vital element in this aspect. Depending on how fast or slow a page loads, user experience increases or decreases.

You can test how fast your website loads on Google’s PageSpeed Insights here. This free tool developed by Google will tell you which aspects of your website can be improved in order to make it load a lot quicker.

Mobile Friendly
As of April 2015, Google uses a website’s mobile friendliness as a bigger factor in determining who gets ranked on mobile search and who doesn’t.

You can test if your website is mobile friendly on Google’s Mobile-Firendly Test
On page SEO is an important aspect that can provide your website the boost it requires. If you want to build a successful online business, you need to keep in mind all these on-page factors I have just mentioned in this post. Website visibility depends a lot on the search engine ranking which will ultimately lead to sale generation.
